Celebrate Earth Day at Mount Trashmore Park

Virginia Beach Parks and Recreation & Virginia Beach Clean Community Commission invite you to Earth Day Celebration 2013 on Saturday, April 20, 2013 at Mount Trashmore Park (one of the nation’s first recycled landfills) in Virginia Beach from 11 am - 4 pm (rain date: Sunday, April 21). Free and open to the public with ample onsite parking, this family-friendly event invites you to celebrate your commitment to bettering the environment. Refresh your approach to making our world a healthier place with various exhibits, displays and activities that will give you a chance to discover and explore effective and convenient ways to green your lifestyle.

Some highlights for this year’s event feature:
AAA Recycling Zone (9am – 4pm, enter from South Blvd.)

  • Electronics Recycling – Take this opportunity to safely dispose of unwanted home electronics and computer equipment.
  • NEW! Metals Recycling – Got scrap metal? Bring your old appliances, like vacuum cleaners, blenders, washers, dryers, ovens, and air conditioners to be recycled. You can also haul your old lawn mowers, trimmers, spreaders, drills, saws and other types of metal.
  • NEW! Household Hazardous Waste Disposal – Properly dispose of items that shouldn’t be in your trash can, like latex paint, automotive fluids, light bulbs, batteries, fertilizers and pool chemicals.  No more than 5 gallons of liquids or 75 pounds of dry chemical can be accepted at this event. Waste should be in original container with labeling intact.
  • Car Battery Round Up – Get a $5 gift card (while supplies last) for every vehicle battery you bring in (up to 5)
  • Child Safety Seat Recycling – Have a used child safety seat that no longer meets industry safety standards? Bring it to the AAA Recycling Zone, and we’ll see to it that all the plastic parts are properly broken down and recycled.
  • Purchase a Rain Barrel and/or Composter - Cut your household water bill with a conservation-friendly rain barrel and make your own nutrient-rich soil for the garden by investing in a composter, both available for purchase onsite at this event! Visit VBgov.com/earthday to reserve yours today.


Recycled Float Parade - New for 2013!
The first Recycled Float Parade competition will be at this year’s Earth Day, and we’re seeking your creativity and resourcefulness! Create a recycled float and enter to compete in the Junior Recycler Division (age 12 & under), Recycler Division (age 13 & up), or the Team Recycler Division (all ages). Prizes will be awarded to first and second place winners in each division. The panel of judges will select the winners based on the most imaginative design, best use of reused/repurposed materials, and the environmental message. All floats must be comprised of repurposed or reused materials. Participants must be able to sit in, ride on, push, pull, or peddle their float. Floats must not be powered by engines of any type. Dumpster Dive Demonstration
Are we recycling as much as we can? Project Green Teens will sift through trash and debris in a park dumpster to find items that could have been recycled. Previous dumpster dives revealed that nearly 50% of one dumpster's contents could have been recycled. See the full report at http://www.VBgov.com/PGT.


Bicycling Activities
Travel green on your bike to the event and receive a free gift (while supplies last) at the free Bike Valet.

  • WTKR News Channel 3 Bike Safety Awareness Ride
    Ride around Lake Trashmore with a team of bicycle enthusiasts to support awareness of bike safety in Virginia Beach http://www.vbgov.com/twowaystreet. Ride begins at 1pm.

Other Attractions 

  • Enjoy live music featuring local talent School of Rock, The Futuros and User Friendly.
  • Delicious festival foods will be available for purchase, and fun children’s activities will be hosted by the Girl Scout Council of Colonial Coast.
  • To increase recycling awareness, the public is invited to paint a recycling container onsite with students from the Governor’s School for the Arts.

Exhibitor Application Deadline Extended through March 29
Applications for Earth Day exhibitors are also being accepted through March 29. Exhibitors must have an organizational mission focusing on environmental stewardship and sustainable living that will inspire attendees to become more environmentally-conscious.
