Senior citizens’ Police Academy

Friday, February 15, 2013

The Virginia Beach Police Department is proud to announce the 19th Session of the Senior Citizens’ Police Academy.  The session will run from April 2, 2013 – April 25, 2013.

The sessions will be held on Tuesday and Thursday mornings:

9:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon

At the Russell House

900 First Colonial Road

Virginia Beach, VA 23454

A graduation ceremony will be held on the last day.

The Virginia Beach Senior Citizens’ Police Academy provides an excellent opportunity for senior citizens, who work and live in the City of Virginia Beach, to become familiar with the day-to-day operations of the Police Department.  This will enable participants to gain a better understanding of the procedures, guidelines, responsibilities, demands, personnel, equipment, policies, and laws that guide the department’s decisions.  It is not intended to make citizens into police officers, but allows citizens to learn more about police operations.  Citizens will become informed as to the actual role of the police, and in return, the police will benefit from the wealth of knowledge the citizens can give about their community.  Subjects that are discussed in the Academy include:

  •         Crime Prevention

  •         Senior Safety/Triad/S.A.L.T.

  •          Special Investigations/Narcotics/Vice

  •         Mounted Patrol

  •          K-9

  •          Office of the Commonwealth’s Attorney

  •         Public Information Office

  •    The History of Law Enforcement
  •    Patrol Functions

  •    Forensics

  •    Basic Criminal Law

  •    Special Operations

  •    Detective Bureau

  •    Crime Solvers

  •    Virginia Beach 9 -1 -1

Applications are now being accepted for the current session and may be picked up at any Virginia Beach Police Precinct, the Crime Prevention Unit at Building #15 in the City Municipal Center, or on the City of Virginia Beach web site at www.VBgov.com/dept/police.  Applicants must be a minimum of 50 years of age and applications for this session must be received by Friday, March 26, 2013.  Acceptance letters will be mailed after the closing date.
