Virginia Aquarium Celebrates World Ocean Day With a Dr. Seuss and Friends Theme

Monday, May 14, 2012

Whether it is “one guest, two guests, red guests or blue guests” the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center will make a splash with others and celebrate World Ocean's Day 2012. Although the official day is June 8, the Aquarium will offer fun activities on Saturday, June 9 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Story times and informational presentations throughout the day will help Aquarium guests learn more about the marine environment. A "fishy fun" scavenger hunt will lead guests on a tour through the Ocean Pavilion to find clues to unlock a treasure chest filled with prizes. Guests can meet divers in the Chesapeake Bay Aquarium and find out what it's like to be underwater with the fishes. Kids and adults can learn how to make their own "trash talking turtle,” play the "Raindrop Rollercoaster" and participate in other fun activities throughout the day.

On Sunday, June 10, beginning a 9 a.m., a Dr. Seuss Themed Breakfast will be offered. Dr. Seuss characters such as Cat in the Hat, Thing One and Thing Two, and a few other Seuss friends will join guests for a delicious breakfast. Reservations are required and should be made by calling Guest Services, 385-0300, prior to June 6.

About World Oceans Day

Since 2002, The Ocean Project and the World Ocean Network have helped to promote and coordinate World Oceans Day events worldwide.  Each year an increasing number of countries and organizations have been marking June 8th as an opportunity to celebrate our world oceans and our personal connection to the sea.  This year, Dr. Seuss will be continuing with its theme from the beloved children’s book, One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish.  Kids and families will get to know funny fish “from here to there” and learn how everyday actions impact their ocean home.

The Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center is an accredited member of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, and the Alliance of Marine Mammal Parks and Aquariums whose mission is conservation through education. The Aquarium is located at 717 General Booth Boulevard, just south of Rudee Inlet in Virginia Beach.  For more information on exhibits, movies, boat rides and special events, call (757) 385-FISH (3474), (TDD 385-4305) or visit www.VirginiaAquarium.com.
