Friday, June 06, 2014

(Virginia Beach, Va., June 6, 2014) – Virginia Beach made the Top 10 list of preferred summer destinations by two of the largest and most trusted online travel communities, Trip Advisor® and Priceline.com. Virginia Beach is one of the Top 10 destinations for domestic travelers this summer, according to a survey conducted by Trip Advisor®. In addition, based on advance Priceline.com hotel bookings, Virginia Beach is fifth on Priceline.com’s list of 2014 “Top 10 Summer Beach Destinations.”

As the second largest revenue generator for Virginia Beach, tourism creates jobs and generates economic impact. In 2012, tourism revenue for Virginia Beach reached $1.28 billion and local tourism-supported jobs equaled 12,025. The Virginia Beach CVB is responsible for promoting year-round leisure, business, meetings and conventions, international and sports travel to Virginia’s most populous city.

The results of the survey conducted by Trip Advisor® show an unusually cold winter will motivate more than 89% of the survey’s respondents to take summer trips and that 45% of those will chose a beach destination. With more than 20 travel media brands, Trip Advisor® reaches more than 260 million unique visitors each month and is regarded as one of the most trusted online travel reference sites.

Survey respondents shared some interesting facts:

  • 36% will spend more money this year than in 2013;

  • 69% will book and stay in a hotel during their visit.

  • 49% said swimming & watersports was on their vacation “to do” list;

  • 18% responded that ice cream was their favorite summer indulgence.

Priceline.com’s travel experts believe that consumers who shop carefully will find that for many destinations, summer 2014 is a buyers' market for travel. They also concede that this past winter's “polar vortex” effect kept many would-be travelers at home, and now many destinations are working extra hard with amazing deals to attract summer visitors. According to priceline.com, many highly desirable travel destinations are sporting lower year-over-year average hotel rates, and summer 2014 is looking like the perfect time to take a trip. Additionally, national airfare averages are running about the same as last year, creating more opportunities for travelers to spend on travel without breaking the bank. Priceline.com is a world leader in online accommodation reservations.
