Virginia Beach Seeks Specialized Adult Foster Care Home Provider

Wednesday, May 21, 2014

The Virginia Beach Department of Human Services is seeking a specialized Adult Foster Care Supervision home provider who can effectively work with men transitioning out of the criminal justice system.

Virginia Beach has the largest Adult Foster Care program in the state and currently maintains 14 adult foster homes. Unique in providing integrated mental health and social services that provide clients with severe mental health disabilities an opportunity for stable, supportive housing, the Department is seeking to expand the availability of housing for individuals receiving services through its Mental Health Supervision Program. This new Adult Foster Care home will be dedicated to housing men who have served time in jail and have the added complexity of a mental health diagnosis. The goal is to create an opportunity for successful re-entry of non-violent offenders into the community, and to avert homelessness and recycling of these individuals through the criminal justice system.

Participants will be supported with wrap-around services including case management, day support programs, and mental health support services; and will be held accountable to the terms of their probation. During business hours, the men will attend day programs which include job training and counseling. The provider must be on site and provide supervision when the men are in the home.

The Adult Foster Care home provider will provide the participating residents room, board, supervision, and support with activities of daily living to include medication monitoring and adherence. This opportunity is ideal for police or probation officers (active or retired) or those who have extensive experience working with the mentally ill. The prospective provider must own or rent a home in the city of Virginia Beach and live in the home; have living space for up to three clients; agree to a criminal history and a child protective services background check; participate in an interview and provide two references, a financial statement showing self-sufficiency, and TB screening; and consent to a home fire inspection. Monthly stipends/rent will be provided for each client.
