Virginia Aquarium Celebrates Sustainable Seafood with Events

Since its inception in 2008, the Virginia Aquarium Sensible Seafood Program’s mission has always been to “promote seafood choices that make sense for a healthy marine environment.” Six years later, with 75 local partners joining the movement, the Sensible Seafood Program is changing the mindset of consumers, chefs and suppliers by demonstrating how small choices in the kitchen result in bigger changes for our oceans.

One of the ways the program accomplishes this is to reach out to the local coastal community to make a difference through events at the Aquarium. These events are focused during the week of the Sensible Seafood Fest. This year there are two additional public programs:

Sensible Seafood Family Day presented by Whole Foods Market, Virginia Beach

11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, May 17, Bay & Ocean Pavilion

During this bonus experience, families will learn how a healthy lifestyle and healthy oceans go hand in hand. Event sponsors and partners will be on hand to engage visitors through activities and present demonstrations. A special menu will be featured at the Aquarium’s Osprey Café. This event is included with Aquarium admission.

 

Seafood Here, There and Everywhere

Sunday, May 18, 2 p.m., Aquarium IMAX® Theater

Join us for the kick-off to the Virginia Aquarium Sensible Seafood Week with a presentation from Oceans Program Senior Policy Specialist Timothy Fitzgerald. He specializes in the intersection of environmental sustainability and public health. Fitzgerald was a co-creator of the Ecofish Seafood Safe program and is an adviser to SeaWeb’s KidSafe Seafood campaign and the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission Coastal Sharks Board. This program is free and sponsored by the Eleanor & Henry Watts Conservation Speaker Series. There will be a reception following the presentation.

 

Virginia Aquarium 5th Annual Sensible Seafood Fest

Thursday, May 22, 7 to 10 p.m.                                                                                                                            

Enjoy a fun and flavorful adults-only feast, presented by PNC Bank, with friends and foodies at the Virginia Aquarium for its 5th Annual Sensible Seafood Fest May 22, 7 to 10 p.m. Stroll the Aquarium and sample sustainable seafood treats from dozens of the area’s finest restaurants and stop by education booths to find out about other sustainable initiatives taking place in Hampton Roads. Just $50 per person includes great food, two adult beverages and all that the Bay & Ocean Pavilion has to offer. Tickets for this popular event are in demand, so early reservations are recommended.
