When preparing to apply citizens should bring:

  • Social Security Numbers (or document numbers for legal immigrants)/
  • Employer and income information for every member of your household who needs coverage (for example, from pay stubs or W-2 forms – Wage and Tax Statements)/
  • Policy numbers for any current health insurance plans covering members of your household.
  • A completed Employer Coverage Tool (can be obtained at www.healthcare.gov) for every job-based plan you or someone in your household is eligible for.

The Marketplace is a new way to find and buy health coverage that fits an individual’s budget and meets their needs.  Anyone interested can apply and enroll for coverage at www.healthcare.gov. This site also provides information about the types of coverage available, answers questions, and informs the user about services provided and how to customize the options to meet their individual needs.

Coverage can begin as soon as Jan. 1, 2014. Citizens may also call the Marketplace Call Center at 1-800-318-2596, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week (TTY:  1-855-889-4325).

Achieving healthcare coverage for all Americans is an important element of the ACA.  Currently, 12 percent or 845,000 of Virginians are uninsured.  Starting in 2014, most people must have health insurance or pay a fee.
