City to Recycle Christmas Trees and Offers Holiday Recycling Tips

Monday, December 16, 2013

Virginia Beach residents are encouraged to recycle their natural Christmas trees for mulching this year by bringing them to the City Landfill and Resource Recovery Center located at 1989 Jake Sears Road, or by placing them curbside for pickup on normal bulk waste collection days. Christmas trees will be handled as normal yard debris. They need to be free of any decorations or tinsel. Trees collected curbside will be processed into compost.

Trees dropped off at the City Landfill and Resource Recovery Center will be ground into mulch.

Christmas tree recycling will help to further increase the amount of wood waste that is recycled and help the city to meet the state mandated 25% recycling rate required of all localities in Virginia.  Helpful recycling tips:

·         Recycle your wrapping paper without tape, staples, bows or ribbon by either reusing it or placing it in your recycling cart. You can stuff it into paper bags, but remember not to put plastic bags in your recycling cart.

·         When discarding shredded paper, make sure to put it in paper bags, not plastic, and staple the paper bags shut.

Recycling preserves the earth by reducing waste and reliance on landfills.  For more information about Recycling, call Public Works Waste Management at (757) 385-4650 or visit www.VBgov.com/wastemgt.
