Homelessness Awareness Events in Virginia Beach Dec. 16 to 21

The Virginia Beach Human Rights Commission (HRC) and Volunteers of America, in partnership with the Department of Housing and Neighborhood Preservation and the BEACH Community Partnerships, will host Homelessness Awareness Week (Dec. 16 to 21) and Homeless Memorial Day (Dec. 21).


A donation drive will be held Dec. 16 to 21. Virginia Beach citizens are encouraged to take part in this community outreach to assist fellow citizens suffering from homelessness. If you can assist, the following donations would be greatly appreciated: new or gently used blankets (twin size only), jeans (men’s, women’s - all sizes), socks, hats, scarves and gloves. Volunteers of America will also accept monetary donations. 


Donated items can be dropped off Dec. 16 to 21 

Monday - Friday (7 a.m. to 7 p.m.)  and Saturday (7 a.m. to noon)

“We want individuals to take a moment during this awareness week to assist our citizens in dire need,” said HRC Chairman Jim Parke. “We encourage business owners, students, civic leagues, and organizations to participate in this important donation drive. All donations will be distributed in the City of Virginia Beach. Your kindness and care for one another is greatly appreciated.”


National Homeless Memorial Day Vigil

Saturday, Dec. 21, 7 p.m.

“We hope citizens will take a moment out of the longest night of the year to remember those who have died and also to honor persons still facing the challenges of homelessness every day by attending the National Homeless Memorial Day Vigil,” said Debbie Maloney, Director of Volunteers of America.
