Contents of Time Capsule to be Revealed Saturday

All-Day Party to be Held on 31st St. for Virginia Beach’s 50th Anniversary, Rain or Shine

Friday, October 11, 2013

The contents of a time capsule buried in City Hall’s cornerstone in 1969 will be revealed Saturday at 3:00 p.m. during the city’s “Official Moment” commemorating Virginia Beach’s 50th anniversary.  The ceremony will be led by Mayor William D. Sessoms, Jr. and will take place at Neptune’s Park.

The time capsule was cemented into City Hall’s cornerstone when the building opened in January 1969. City crews recovered it yesterday by first removing the cornerstone, then breaking inside to reveal a large metal box. Later, city officials carefully opened the box.

Unfortunately, the time capsule was not water-tight, and many of its contents – but not all of them – were destroyed. Fortunately, city officials have a log of all items placed in the time capsule. Over the next two days, they will recreate the contents and unveil them at Saturday’s gathering.
