Citizens Invited to Sea Level Rise/Flooding Adaptation Public Town Hall Meeting

The City of Virginia Beach and the Hampton Roads Sea Level Rise/Flooding Adaptation Forum - a consortium of the Virginia Sea Grant Program, the Hampton Roads Planning District Commission, and Old Dominion University - are presenting a Public Town Hall Meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2013 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Advanced Technology Center (ATC) Theater, located on the Virginia Beach Campus of Tidewater Community College, at 1800 College Crescent, Virginia Beach.  Directions to the ATC can be found at http://www.vbatc.com/vbdirections.html.

 

The theme of the Town Hall Meeting will be “Federal, State and Local Perspectives to Adapting to Sea Level Rise and Flooding.”  Introductions and brief comments will be provided by Clay Bernick, City of Virginia Beach; Ben McFarlane, Hampton Roads Planning District Commission; and Larry Atkinson, Climate Change and Sea Level Rise Initiative, Old Dominion University.  Featured speakers and their topics will be:

  • Kelly Burks-Copes with the Environmental Laboratory, US Army Engineer Research and Development Center, Vicksburg, Miss., speaking on "Quantifying Risks of Climate Change and Sea Level Rise to Naval Station Norfolk (SERDP RC-1701)”; and

  •  

  • Marcia Berman with the Center for Coastal Resource Management, Virginia Institute of Marine Science, speaking on “Moving Forward: Next Steps for Confronting Increased Flood Risks”.  Her topic will include a summary of the report VIMS submitted to the Virginia General Assembly entitled, “Recurrent Flood Study for Tidewater Virginia”; tools VIMS is preparing for local governments and citizens; and Shoreline Best Management Practices as an adaptation strategy.

Time will be allocated at the Town Hall Meeting for questions and answers, as well as a discussion of local responses and actions.
