The City of Virginia Beach has hired Dannette R. Smith as its new Director of Human Services.  Her start date is July 1, 2013.

Smith will direct the mental health, substance abuse, developmental services, social services and financial assistance divisions, along with the Pendleton Child Service Center and Juvenile Detention Center.  She will oversee a department of 1,081 employees with an annual budget of more than $108 million.

“We’re so pleased that Dannette is joining our team,” said Cindy A. Curtis, Deputy City Manager.  “She brings a wealth of experience in managing large organizations while working to address the needs of the community’s most vulnerable citizens.”

With 25 years of experience in the human services field, Smith comes to Virginia Beach from Seattle, where she served as the city’s Director of Human Services. Prior to that, she was the regional and county director of the Fulton County Department of Family and Children Services in Atlanta, Ga., and Director of Youth and Family Services for Mecklenberg County.

Dannette is a graduate of Eastern Michigan University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology.  She holds a Master of Social Work degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago and is a graduate of Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government Executive Management and Leadership Program.
