Commonwealth v. Michael John Cardinal III; Sexual Assault of Child Draws 12-Year Prison Sentence

Monday, April 29, 2013

Harvey L. Bryant, Commonwealth’s Attorney for the City of Virginia Beach, announced today that Michael John Cardinal III, 43 years old, of the 1200 block of Secretariat Run in Virginia Beach, Virginia, was sentenced by Circuit Court Judge Edward H. Hanson Jr. for two (2) counts each of Aggravated Sexual Battery, Object Sexual Penetration, and Custodial Indecent Liberties.  Judge Hanson sentenced Cardinal to 24 years in prison with 12 years suspended, leaving 12 years to serve.

Michael Cardinal was found guilty by Judge Hanson after a trial on August 22, 2012. The Commonwealth’s evidence proved that between the years of 2006 and 2009, Cardinal repeatedly sexually assaulted a young child known to him.  The child disclosed the abuse, and detectives from the Virginia Beach Police Department began investigating the crimes.  During the investigation, Cardinal admitted to the touching, apologized, and later asked when he was going to jail.

Cardinal has previous convictions for Obtaining Money by False Pretenses (Attempt) – 2 counts, Conspiracy, Forgery, and Disorderly Conduct.
