Wednesday, April 24, 2013

Join Mayor William D. Sessoms, Jr. in a 1.5-mile walk-run at the annual Celebrating Children event at Mount Trashmore Park on May 4 from 9 a.m. to noon.

All children participating in the walk-run will be awarded a medal for their efforts. Trophies will be awarded for the first two individuals, first family and the first military family to cross the finish line.  Schools participating in the School Challenge also will have the opportunity to win a trophy for their school by having the most participation from the school.  To register, call (757) 385-4537.

Following the walk-run, participants and their families can enjoy live entertainment and child-friendly games and activities.  Community resources and vendors will offer displays with interactive exhibits designed to promote healthy parent-child interactions.  All activities at this event are free to the public.

Celebrating Children is an annual event organized by the Pendleton Child Services Center of the Human Services Department, as part of Families for a Lifetime and the City of Virginia Beach campaign to promote happy, healthy families and children.  The event coincides with the conclusion of April as Child Abuse Prevention Month and the Month of the Military Child. This year’s sponsors include Chesapeake Riders, Virginia Beach GrowSmart, VA Premier Health Inc. and Anthem HealthKeepers Plus. For more information, contact Kathy Baker at (757) 385-4537.
