Dog Found Dead at Animal Shelter

Tuesday, February 19, 2013

On February 18, 2013 at approximately 11:00 a.m., a volunteer with the Virginia Beach Animal Care and Adoption Center found a deceased, male Pit Bull dog in an outdoor dog run area.  The volunteer notified two employees with the center who immediately attempted CPR.  The attempt to resuscitate the dog was unsuccessful.

The preliminary investigation revealed the dog was left outside overnight after a caretaker had taken the dog outside Sunday afternoon.  The Virginia Beach Police Department has initiated an investigation into all aspects of the matter including the shelter’s policies and procedures and whether they were followed by employees.

A necropsy will be performed on the dog to determine the cause of death.  Also, the State Veterinarian has been contacted in regards to this incident.

This case remains under investigation by detectives at the Second Precinct.
