Monitoring in Virginia Beach
City staff are monitoring stormwater quality in watersheds within Virginia Beach to develop long term stormwater quality trends for different land uses. The data collected through this effort will be used to help with restoration of the Chesapeake Bay. There are two of these long term water quality monitoring stations installed in the city that are supported by the USGS and HRSD to help establish the long term trends in our area. City staff also perform routine monitoring to measure treatment effectiveness of existing stormwater management facilities. Field monitoring equipment as well as lab services are utilized for testing the substances of interest ranging from nutrients, sediment, bacteria and any other site specific pollutants of concern. A summary of the monitoring data collected each year is included in the MS4 Permit annual report.
