Flood Insurance Program

The City of Virginia Beach is a participating community in the National Flood Insurance Program.  The program is offered through the Federal Emergency Management Agency for home owners in areas that may experience flood damage as a result of heavy rains, hurricane or other natural disaster. The insurance can be obtained through your insurance agent that provides your homeowners policy. Separate policies are needed for protection against wind and flood damage, which people frequently don't realize until too late. Contact your insurance agent for information on your coverage.

The Planning Department  is responsible for the administration of the National Flood Insurance Program for the City of Virginia Beach.

Flood Insurance Rate Maps are available for inspection by the public in the Planning Department located at 2875 Sabre Street, Suite 500.  You can also view both current and historic flood insurance rate maps (FIRM) by visiting the FEMA Map Service Center.

Citizens with questions concerning the National Flood Insurance Program or requiring a verbal Flood Zone Determination may call the Planning Department, Monday through Friday between the hours of 8:30am and 5:00pm, at 385-4621.  A written determination can be provided by filling out the following form.

Please allow up to five working days for your determination.
