What is Earth Hour?

Earth Hour is a unique opportunity for you to become more sustainable and do something positive for the environment:
  • It’s been the source of inspiration for millions of people taking steps toward a cleaner, safer future.
  • It’s not just about saving energy for one hour; it’s about going beyond the hour with lasting, behavior-changing actions for a sustainable planet.

When was the Earth Hour established?

In 2021 the Earth Hour campaign will mark its 15th consecutive year. More than 2.2 million individuals and 2,000 businesses turned their lights out for one hour in the first Earth Hour event, which was held on March 31 2007, in Sydney, Australia.

Join us at Earth Hour and be a part of a global community that is taking action toward a more sustainable future. A simple idea to switch off your lights for an hour has become the world's fastest growing environmental movement.
Together we can inspire change, big or small, to change the world we live in.

Virginia Beach Involvement

On Saturday, March 27th at 8:30 p.m. the City of Virginia Beach will participate  for a sixth time in this global initiative by turning off all non-essential lights for one hour.

Through this symbolic action, the City strives to encourage residents and businesses to turn off their lights, and to find ways in which they can become more sustainable.
