Welcome: A Message from your Police Chief

I would like to welcome you to the Virginia Beach Police Department’s website. Please feel free to take a few minutes to explore the site as it contains some valuable information about our department. We recommend that you visit often, as we frequently update the content. I believe the website will help you gain a better perspective about the work the men and women of the VBPD perform each day. In an effort to increase our transparency, we have posted our Policies and Field Guides, which would act as a perfect starting point for your exploration of the site.

The Virginia Beach Police Department employs over 1,000 sworn and civilian staff to serve our residents and the millions of visitors who travel to our city annually to visit our 38 miles of beaches. With 450,000 year-round residents, Virginia Beach currently ranks as the largest city in Virginia and 39th largest city in the United States. Despite our large population, we are routinely ranked as the safest city of its size in the nation – something our department is incredibly proud of.

Our department holds its core values – Professionalism, Respect, Integrity, Dedication, and Excellence – in high esteem, with our officers exemplifying them daily. They are expected to demonstrate professionalism and be respectful to all people during their daily interactions. Dedication to those we serve encourages us to aim for excellence and perform our duties with integrity in all aspects. We hold ourselves to the highest professional standards and are committed to these values.

We encourage our citizens to get involved with their neighbors and engage in community policing initiatives with our officers. We view these interactions as opportunities to foster relationships with our residents and civic partners, thus earning the trust of our city’s diverse communities.

For those of you who may be interested in supporting our community as a member of our department, the recruitment page is a good resource (Careers Page). We are constantly seeking community-minded individuals who desire to serve and protect our citizens. Attracting the most qualified persons who will uphold our values, demonstrate integrity, and exemplify respect in all pursuits is a vital part of our mission.

The most impactful thing citizens of our wonderful city can do is provide us with feedback, both positive and constructive. We value all input and take the concerns of those we serve seriously. To share your observations, please email us at vbpd@vbgov.com. We also encourage you to connect with us on Facebook and Twitter.

I am honored to have the opportunity to serve this great city and incredibly proud of the work this department continues to do to improve the quality of life for everyone in our community. Together, let’s continue to make the City of Virginia Beach a Community for a Lifetime.
