Requirements:
Age
- Must be 20 years old to apply

- Must also reach 21st birthday before completing the academy
- Sworn police officers do face mandatory retirement at age 65
Education
- Must be a high school graduate (or hold a GED) at minimum
Other Requirements
- Must be a U.S. Citizen
- Must be eligible to obtain a Virginia or North Carolina driver's license
- Must sign agreement to avoid using tobacco products on or off duty
- Must maintain an acceptable fitness level
