Reading the Flood Insurance Rate Map

​​​​​​How to View Your Flood Zone

Flood Insurance Rate Maps are available for online viewing from the City of Virginia Beach's Online Mapping Service or through the FEMA Map Service Center.

To view your flood zone using the Virginia Beach City Map follow the steps below:

  1. Enter your street address, including city and state, into the search bar in the top right corner and click on the magnifying glass icon. The map should zoom into your property.
  2. Select the contents icon (middle icon on the top left hand side) to open a list of available data.
  3. Click the box next to Flood Zones – Effective Jan 16 2015 to activate the flood zone layer.

 

What does the City of Virginia Beach map mean?

  • The map does not have shaded color on the parcel or shows pink shading: You are not currently located in a Special Flood Hazard Area. This does not mean that you will never flood, only that you are at a lower risk for flooding.
  • The map shows blue shading: You are located in an AE flood zone.
  • The map shows yellow shading: You are located in a VE flood zone.

 

Flood Zone Determination

 The Planning Department can provide both verbal and written flood zone determinations to interested residents.  Residents interested in a verbal determination may call the Planning Department, Monday through Friday between the hours of 8:00am and 5:00pm, at 385-4621.  A written determination can be provided by filling out the following form.
