Adult Softball

Adult Softball Leagues are offered in the Spring and Fall at various ballfields throughout the city. Both Competitive and Recreational leagues are available. Teams may carry up to 20 players. Games consist of doubleheaders per night of play.

  • ​​Competitive (Comp): consists of teams with experience playing softball. Playoffs are offered in each league, and a 1+1HR limit is used (i.e. a team cannot hit its 2nd home run until the opposing team has hit 1). 
  • Recreational (Rec): consists of teams with minimal​ experience playing softball. This league is recreation focused where teams are playing as a social/work/family event. Playoffs are not offered, and a 0HR limit is used (i.e. a home run is an out).

    ​NOTE: Any player on a Recreational league roster is ineligible to be on a competitive league roster. A player may participate on multiple Competitive league teams or multiple Recreational league teams as long as: 

    ​1) the teams are not in leagues which play on the same night 
  • 2) the player has enrolled or signed each team’s roster 

Registration Information

  • Registration is taken on a team basis:
    • Online registration (for credit card payments) is available on our web site (during open registration) 
    • In-person registration (for check/money order payments made payable to Treasurer, City of Virginia Beach) is accepted at the Sports Management office (4001 Dam Neck Road). Note: multiple checks (for one team) and cash payments are not accepted.
  • Each team pays a franchise fee to enter (payable at registration)
    • Competitive leagues (includes playoffs): $600
    • Recreational league (no playoffs): $525
    • Women’s League (playoffs for top 2 finishing teams): $525
  • ​​No residency requirement ​
  • 14-16 games guaranteed
  • Players must be at least 18 years old or a high school graduate. Players under 18 years of age who are high school graduates or graduating high school seniors must provide written parental consent. Players under 18 years of age can only be added by submitting a team roster or player addition form with the written parental consent attached.
  • Leagues are subject to close-out prior to the last day of signups. If you see “Only # spaces left. Register now!” under the “Add to Cart” link and/or “Adding a team failed because it would exceed the maximum allowed” when creating your team, the activity is full. Please consider another option.​
  • Individuals who are looking to join a team can contact the Sports Management Office for more information. Placement is not guaranteed.

​Spring 2020 Information 

Online Individual Player Registration will end March 23.  As of March 24, players can only be added to teams by submitting an original roster or player add/release form to the Sports Management Office (link to forms can be found to the right under General League Information).
Coaches are encouraged to check their online rosters to ensure accuracy. Rosters and schedules can be found by following the Schedules & Standings link under General League Information located on in the right sidebar of this webpage. Rosters freeze as of 5 p.m. Friday, May 8, 2020.

  • Team Registration:  February 10 – March 2, 2020. Late registrations will be accepted as space allows March 3 and 4 with a $50 late registration fee. Coaches may register/pay for their team but players should not be added online until the Individual Player Registration period. During team registration, players should not join the team roster online. ​
  • Individual Player Registration:  March 9 – 23 (players may join registered teams online with the team password from their coach, or by the coach submitting a team roster form or a roster addition form). Beginning March 24, players can only be added by submitting a player roster addition form. ​
  • Divisions Offered: Men's (Tue/Thu), Women's (Wed), Coed (Mon/Fri), Men's Church (Mon), Coed Church (Fri) 
  • Practices: March 23 – April 2 (if desired) 
    • ​​Once your team registration payment has been processed, contact us at (757) 385-0458 (M-F, 8 am - 5 pm) to reserve up to three practice times
    • Practice reservations must be made by 5 pm, Wednesday, March 18 and are available on a first-come, first-served basis
    • ​Most practices will incur a $10 lighting fee​
  • Season (approximate): April 3 - Early July 2020 (dependent on weather)
  • In an effort to balance the competition, Sports Management/Athletics will administer the following: 
    • Spring and Fall 2019 playoff teams are eligible to move up to the next division/level of play
    • Spring and Fall 2019 performance will be used to determine divisional placement 
    • Divisional assignments will be made at the discretion of the Adult Softball League Administrator ​

Fall 2020 Season Information​

• Individual Player Registration:  July 27 – August 10, 2020 (players may join registered teams online with the team password from their coach, or by the coach submitting a team roster form or a roster addition form). Beginning August 11, players can only be added by submitting a player roster addition form. 
• Divisions Offered: Men's (Tue/Thu), Women's (Wed), Coed (Mon/Fri), Men's Church (Mon), Coed Church (Fri) 
• Practices: None 
• Season (approximate): August 14 - Early November 2020 (dependent on weather)

​All bats must have one or more of the following stamps in order to be used in Virginia Beach Parks & Recreation Leagues:

Bats that have one or more of the above stamps but are listed on the “ASA Non-Approved Bat List” are illegal and may not be used in Virginia Beach Parks and Recreation Leagues. This list is subject to change throughout the season. Questions regarding bat legality that arise during a game will be decided by the umpire(s). ​All leagues will use the following balls: 
  • Men - Optic Yellow 12 inch .52 COR and 300 Compression ball with A.S.A. Stamp
  • Women - Optic Yellow 11 inch .52 COR and 300 Compression ball with A.S.A. Stamp
  • COED - Ball will alternate between male and female batters: 12" for males, 11" for females

Optic yellow balls are required for all leagues. COR/compression and A.S.A. stamp must be legible. Teams hit their own balls in all games. See Adult Softball Bylaws for additional information.​​​​
