About Parks & Rec Month

Each July since 1985, America has celebrated Parks and Recreation Month, a program of the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA). The goal is to raise awareness of the vital impact that parks, recreation, and conservation have on communities across the U.S. With more than 280 parks and 7 incredible community recreation centers; there is no shortage of ways to play in Virginia Beach! Below are a few special activities happening in July.

65AnniLogoFINAL.pngCelebrating 65 Years of Parks & Recreation

This year, we're celebrating 65 years of Virginia Beach Parks & Recreation. Every park, natural area, and recreation center has a history made up of thousands of stories that help to define it. This July, we want to hear your park and recreation story and encourage our community to get out and create new ones, as well.

Parks and Recreation facilities are at the center of so many experiences and memories. Our local parks are often our first experiences in nature, our introduction to a favorite hobby or physical activity. They are places to gather with friends and family, spaces to celebrate life’s special moments, sites that connect us with essential community services, and so much more.
