May is National Bike Month, promoted by the League of American Bicyclists and celebrated in communities from coast to coast. Established in 1956, National Bike Month is a chance to showcase the many benefits of bicycling — and encourage more folks to give biking a try.

​May 1 | Open Stand @ REI
Free use of bike stand and tools with a tech (BYOBike) 12 pm - 1:30 pm & 3 pm - 4:30 pm. Must register by either calling or visiting your local Virginia Beach REI.
May 2 | Smartmouth Brewing's Pedal Pusher Bingo Begins
Celebrate National Bike Month all-May-long with the release of Pedal Pusher IPA and Smartmouth’s award-winning game of Bike Bingo.

​May 4 | National Bike to School Day
Celebrate a healthier lifestyle and get a little exercise before class on National Bike to School Day 2022. 
​May 5 | Hands on Fix a Flat @ REI
Must register by either calling or visiting your local Virginia Beach REI. 
May 8 | Open Stand @ REI

May 14 | Bike Rodeo @ Great Neck Rec Center
Open to children 5 - 12 years old, this event is a family freindly bike-themed event from 9 am - 11 am.

​​May 14 | Fix a Flat Clinic @ REI
Events at 11 am, 1 pm & 3 pm. Registration not required.

May 15 | Commuter Basics Workshop @ REI
Event will take place at from 3 pm - 4:30 pm. Must register by either calling or visiting your local Virginia Beach REI.
May 18 | Bikepacking 101 @ REI  
Event from 6 pm - 8 pm. Must register by either calling or visiting your local Virginia Beach REI.

May 20 | National Bike to Work Day 
Bike to Work Day is an annual event that promotes the bicycle as an option for commuting to work. Participate from anywhere! 

May 20 | Bike to Work Day, Honoring First Responders

The event will begin at 9am. Vice Mayor Rosemary Wilson will make a proclamation in honor of National Bike Month, then signal the start of a 6-mile roundtrip bike ride to City Hall and back to the Parks & Rec Admin. Bldg.

DETAILS:

8:30 am: Arrival time | Gear up and visit with our partners before the ride to grab some free TRAFFIX swag, get your bike tuned up at the Trek Wrench Station, and learn about Bike Buddies from the Virginia Beach Parks & Recreation Foundation. 

9 am: Vice Mayor Rosemary Wilson will present a proclamation in honor of National Bike Month. 

BIKE RIDE:

Shift gears to begin our 6-mile roundtrip ride to City Hall and back -- escorted by first responders from Virginia Beach Police & Fire Departments, EMS, and Sheriff's Office!

Ready to build healthy habits through biking this May? This Bike Month, we challenge YOU to bike 31 miles in 31 days at your own pace. 

Virginia Beach is an award-winning, 'Bicycle Friendly Community' with over 300 miles of bikeways and trails, including trails in over 230 parks and natural areas, 27 miles of unpaved paths in two state parks, and a federal wildlife refuge. 

During the month of May, participate in our self-guided 31in31 Challenge, then come back here to fill out the form and claim your badge of honor - a super cool, super-exclusive sticker to show off your biking prowess, perfect for water bottles, bumpers, or anywhere else you want to rep it.
