Meet Your Coaches

Bayside- David Wheeler.JPGDavid Wheeler

Welcome to the Marlins! I am your swim team representative. I have worked for parks and recreation for 10 years now in various roles. I have many years of experience as a competitive swimmer and just as many coaching a variety of levels including Summer, High School, and Recreation leagues. In addition to swimming I also have experience coaching and helping direct Water Polo programs. Growing up I moved around a lot but have settled in Virginia Beach, I love the community here and all there is to do. When I’m not at the pool I can be found running EMS as a Marine Rescue Technician driving boat and diving as a public safety diver or riding on an ambulance as a member of Ocean Park, you may even see me blowing glass at local studios. My advice to our swimmers is that even though swimming is a team sport it is just as much an individual sport. Focus on self-improvement in terms of stroke technique as well as time and all else will fall into place.

Kent McKee
Kent attended Penn State University where he received a degree in Mechanical Engineering. Kent swam competitively throughout high school and college. Kent has coached in our program for the better part of twelve years, most of that time with Bayside. Kent is also a founding coach in our water polo program. His hobbies include swimming, sailing and watching soccer. His advice to swimmers is to "Have fun and work hard!"

Claire LundbergBayside- Claire Lundberg.JPG

Claire has grown up in Virginia Beach starting her swimming background at age 7 with Larkspur Lasers summer team from there she moved on to swimming with the Kempsville Stingrays at Kempsville Rec Center, she later began year round swimming with VYAC and ECAT. She has had experience as a volunteer coach with Larkspur and currently helps teach American Red Cross programs at Bayside Rec Center. She is currently a senior at Kempsville High School on the Varsity Swim Team and plans to attend college to pursue studies in Speech Pathology and Special Education.  When she is not teaching swimming, teaching, or coaching Claire likes to go to the beach or spend time with her friends and family. Her advice to swimmers is “Don’t be afraid to try new things and push yourself, set smart goals and try your best and most of all have fun!”
