Our summer child care programs will fill your child's day with fun activities, games, crafts, special events and more! Make a splash at our recreation center programs or hop, skip and jump over to our convenient school-based programs. We also have plenty of specialty camps that cater to your budding athlete, nature-lover or curious engineer! ​​​​​​​​​​

 Early Childhood

Licensed Early Childhood Programs

Our licensed Preschool and PreK programs encourage creativity and independence while developing literacy, language development, problem-solving, reasoning, and gross and fine motor skills in a safe environment. These programs are licensed and regulated by the Virginia Department of Social Services Licensing Division. Children must be fully potty trained. Snacks are provided however, children will need to bring their lunch daily. These programs operate from September 7, 2021 – August 31, 2022. Your child will receive a Virginia Beach Recreation Center membership valid from September 1, 2021 – August 31, 2022 once enrollment is complete. A Parks & Recreation Fee Waiver is applicable to these programs.

If this is your first time registering your child in an Out-of-School Time Program, you will receive an email from ePACT to complete our required registration forms and upload any required documents to the email address on your Parks & Recreation Account within 24 hours after your initial enrollment. If you previously completed ePACT for your child, a reconfirmation email from ePACT will be sent to the email address on your Parks & Recreation Account if any summer waivers and consents are required.

 School Age

School-Age Programs

Our school-age camps are for ages 5-11 (completed K-5th for the 2021/22 school year) and located in select recreation centers and Virginia Beach City Public Elementary Schools. Your child will meet new friends, challenge themselves with fun and energetic recreational activities and sports. Morning and afternoon snacks and lunch are needed daily. Refrigeration and microwaves are not available at school sites. Sneakers are required to participate. These programs are exempt from licensure under state code § 63.2-1715.

Note: Due to ongoing staffing challenges we are unable to provide summer camps for Middle School & Teens. We are prioritizing elementary school age and early childhood programs. It is our intention to reintroduce middle school & teen camps summer 2023.

Rec Centers | ages 5 – 11 
Note: Registration groups are based on the grade your child completed for the 2021/22 school year. Group 1: Kindergarten, Group 2: 1st & 2nd Grade, Group 3: 3rd, 4th or 5th Grade.

 RISE

R.I.S.E Summer Enrichment Program

Our summer R.I.S.E. program will provide fun, hands-on experimental, project-based learning through four avenues: (R)ecreation, (I)magination, (S)ocialization, (E)ducation. Breakfast and Lunch will be provided daily. Participants will need to bring a morning and afternoon snack. Please note: RISE is a nine-week summer education enrichment program and your child will participate in all academic enrichment and recreational activities each day. We require notification in writing prior to the program beginning of any dates that may conflict with the attendance requirement. Failure to do so may result in removal from the program and/or elements of this program.

 Therapuetic Rec Camps

​Therapeutic Recreation Camps

TR DISCOVERY CAMP
This 7-week day camp for individuals with disabilities allows campers to socialize, learn, and have fun while creating camp memories. Our vision is to create an environment which fosters new friendships, sparks the camper’s imagination, develops a greater sense of independence, all while having fun learning new skills and activities. Individualized goals will be established and measured by participation in classes such as sports & fitness, STEM, arts & crafts, music & dance, hobbies & games, and more! Class instruction is offered in small and large group formats and activities will be adapted to meet camper's needs. We are committed to ensuring all have an enjoyable and successful camp experience. Campers will be encouraged to participate in activities in a positive and safe environment while following the rules of camp. Camper groups will be determined after registration and be based on both age and ability level. Campers will need to bring their own lunch (meal and drink) and necessary personal items. In addition to class leaders and camper assistants, Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialists (CTRS’) will be onsite to work with campers.

NOTE: This program is designed to promote community recreation and is not intended to provide behavior therapy interventions, tools or techniques.

  • Staff to Participant Ratio: 1:2 to 1:4 based on individual need.
  • Skills Needed: Be able to maintain social distancing with or without verbal reminders; wear mask or face shield when inside the building OR have a completed mask exemption form; able to follow familiar one to two-step directions; manage own behavior with minimal staff intervention and able to make simple choices. Participants must have a desire to participate in sessions.
  • Participants who require 1:1 assistance are welcome with their own assistant. (a background check is required and will be paid for by the City)
  • Attention Parents/Guardians: We are committed to ensuring all campers have an enjoyable, successful, and safe camp experience. Class instructors will move from room to room to provide camp classes, making adaptations as needed. Equipment and supplies will be sanitized throughout the day. Staff and campers will be required to wear a face mask at all times – if guidelines change this will be communicated. We plan on resuming field trips during program so long as it remains safe to do so.
  • Ages: 5-22 (must have attended 2021/2022 school year)
  • Cost: $1,200 - $200 due at registration, remaining balance paid in payment plan
  • Camp Hours: 8:30am – 3:30pm
  • Dates: June 27 – August 11 (Please note there is no extended care option & there will be no program on July 4)

TR NEW/JUNIOR VENTURES

This 7-week program for individuals with disabilities incorporates leisure education, socialization, and skill building through recreation participation. Participants will be given the opportunity to develop lifetime leisure skills, plan community outings and work on individualized goals by participating in various activities on site and in the community. Groups will participate in activities at recreation centers including swimming. Participants will be divided in two groups after registration occurs. Participants will be responsible for any admission fees incurred on trips or special events. In addition to the group leader and assistant leaders, a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) will be onsite to work with participants.

NOTE: This program is designed to promote community recreation and is not intended to provide behavior therapy interventions, tools or techniques

**An interview with a Therapeutic Recreation Supervisor must be completed before program placement for participants who are participating in this program for the first time.**

  • Staff to Participant Ratio: 1:4 to 1:5
  • Skills Needed: with or without minimal staff assistance is able to: maintain social distancing with or without verbal reminders; wear mask or face shield when inside the building OR have a completed mask exemption form; complete two-step directions; make choices; manage personal belongings and have the desire to achieve an independent leisure lifestyle.
  • Attention Parents/Guardians: We are committed to ensuring all campers have an enjoyable, successful, and safe camp experience. Participants will have a home room as well as will have access to the gym and breaks outside. Equipment and supplies will be sanitized throughout the day. Staff and campers will be required to wear a face mask at all times – if guidelines change this will be communicated.
  • Ages: 13-22 (must have attended 2021/2022 school year)
  • Cost: $1,000 - $200 due at registration, remaining balance paid in payment plan
  • Camp Hours: 8:30am – 4:30pm
  • Dates: June 27 – August 11 (Please note there is no extended care option & there will be no program on July)

TR Surf-n-Fun

Would you like to ride a wave? Join Therapeutic Recreation Programs for an afternoon of surf and fun in the sun. Instruction will take place at the Pendleton surfing area. Each surfer will receive a 30-minute surf lesson. Time slots will be assigned after registration. Surfers will be mailed parking passes and additional information prior to the event date. Surfboards and lifejackets are provided; Waves are not guaranteed. Membership cards are not required, so bring the whole family! 
*Note: This program is only offered to individuals with a disability.

  • Staff to Participant Ratio: 2:1 each surfer will have at least 2 staff with them in the water
  • Skills Needed: Participants must have a desire to participate and be willing to get in the ocean water.

Master Lego Builder | ages 8 – 11

Aspiring engineers will engage in instructional design while building cool creations like businesses, green spaces, and high-rises to create a city of their dreams. This experience will boost confidence and creativity.

Refrigeration is not available.

Come and join us as we introduce a variety of sports, including basketball, pickleball, volleyball, and more. Welcome, all new and novice participants! This camp will develop your tennis fundamentals (e.g., groundstrokes, volley, serve) through a fun play-to-learn style of learning. Practice match play and learn sportsmanship and game rules. Different court sizes and modified tennis equipment will help youth to rally in no time. Camps are held on the Cox High School courts next to Great Neck Recreation Center. In the event of inclement weather, the program will move inside to the gym at Great Neck Recreation Center. Sneakers are required to participate. Bring a water bottle and snack each day. Refrigeration is not available.

Creative Arts | ages 6– 11

Get your creative juices flowing with a week of painting with acrylics and watercolors, dabble with oil pastels, create some fun crafts, and meet new friends! There will be an open gallery event and a small celebration at the end of the week to show off your works of art! Bring a water bottle and snack each day. Refrigeration is not available.

All Day Camps

Martial Arts | ages 6-11

Spend the week learning traditional Japanese Martial Arts with an emphasis on Aikido and Judo style. Participants will spend the morning with an experienced Martial Arts Instructor to develop discipline, confidence, and knowledge while mastering a new skill. We will break up the day with activities in the gym, pool, and activity room. Sneakers are required to participate. Morning and afternoon snacks and a lunch are needed daily. Refrigeration is not available.

Rock-it Rock Wall | ages 6-11

Learn how to climb Seatback's 24ft rock wall through instructional activities, challenges, and games. By the end of the week, any participant will be able to take these skills and confidently take on the challenge of other rock walls. We will break up the day with other activities in the gym, pool, and activity room. Sneakers are required to participate. Morning and afternoon snacks and a lunch are needed daily. Refrigeration is not available.

Last Blast | ages 6-11

Teen Media Studio Camps


Camp MEdia | Rising 7th - 9th Graders

  • Location: Williams Farm Recreation Center (Teen Media Studio)

  • Ages: 11y – 15y rising 7th-9th grade students
  • Time: 7:30am to 4:00pm

This program is designed to provide middle schoolers with hands-on opportunities to learn about audio production, photography, videography, and other aspects of video production. It will cover various forms of consumable media to include music, YouTube videos, podcasts, short films, etc. Bring a water bottle, lunch, and 2 snacks each day.  Non-perishable and peanut-free is highly recommended.  All participants must also have a valid recreation center membership or a day pass to participate (a day pass must be purchased each day).   

Music In You | Rising 7th - 9th Graders

  • Location: Williams Farm Recreation Center (Teen Media Studio)
  • Dates: July 25 – July 29
  • Ages: 11y – 15y rising 7th-9th grade students
  • Hours: 7:30am-4:00pm
  • Cost: $222.00

This program is designed to bring out the inner singer-songwriter/artist within each participant. Participants will learn that musical genius is not required to be a good songwriter or artist - only an understanding of the process, knowing what makes songs work, and having a passion to create. Participants will create their own songs, in various genres, and will be given the opportunity to record them at the end of the week.  Bring a water bottle, lunch, and 2 snacks each day.  Non-perishable and peanut-free is highly recommended. All participants must also have a valid recreation center membership or a day pass to participate (a day pass must be purchased each day).   


Through Your Eyes | Rising 7th - 9th Graders
  • Location: Williams Farm Community Recreation Center Teen Media Studio; 5252 Learning Circle, Virginia Beach, VA 23462
  • Dates: July 11 – July 15
  • Ages: 11y – 5y rising 7th-9th grade students
  • Hours: 7:30am-4:00pm

  • This program is designed to give participants a firsthand introduction into the world of visual media, specifically photography and videography. Participants will learn the basics of photography, videography, and lighting techniques and at the end will have started a mini photo album and completed a short video project. Bring a water bottle, lunch, and 2 snacks each day.  Non-perishable and peanut-free is highly recommended. All participants must also have a valid recreation center membership or a day pass to participate (a day pass must be purchased each day).

Payment, Refund & Cancelation Policy

Most of our programs and camps require a non-refundable, non-transferrable registration fee and/or deposit at registration. The monthly or weekly balances are due according to the dates indicated on the program payment schedule. Any past due balance(s) must be paid in full before you can register for any Parks & Recreation Program or Service.

Payment Policy: if the monthly or weekly balance is not received by the due dates indicated on the program payment schedule, your child will be withdrawn from that session and/or week. Please refer to the payment policy indicated on the appropriate payment schedule. 

Refund and Cancellation Policy: requests should be submitted in writing to OSTRegistration@vbgov.com at least 7 days prior to the start date to be eligible for a refund, minus any non-refundable fees. Requests submitted less than 7 days but prior to the start date are eligible for 50% of a refund. Approved refunds will be processed back to the appropriate payer and payment method.
  • Cash refunds are subject to availability of funds at any recreation center
  • Check refunds can take up to 30 days to be received
  • Credit Card refunds should post within 2-3 days of being processed
