Summer Camps

Our summer camps will fill your child's day with fun activities, games, crafts, special events and more! Make a splash at our recreation center camps or hop, skip and jump over to our convenient school-based camps. We also have plenty of specialty camps that cater to your budding athlete, nature-lover or curious engineer! ​​​​​​​​​​

 Early Childhood

Our preschool, pre-k and kinderbuddies programs are designed to encourage play, creativity, exploration and FUN! Each week will be a different theme including age appropriate activities, crafts, swimming, on site special events and field trips. Participants are provided snacks however they will need to bring their lunch daily. These programs are licensed and regulated by the Virginia Department of Social Services Licensing Division.

Our junior and senior camps are for rising 1st – 6th graders located in select recreation centers and Virginia Beach City Public Elementary Schools. Your child will meet new friends, challenge themselves with fun and energetic recreational activities, sports and age-appropriate field trips. Morning and afternoon snacks and lunch are needed daily. Refrigeration and microwaves are not available at school sites. Sneakers are required to participate.

Rec Center Juniors rising 1st – 3rd graders  |  Rec Center Seniors rising 4th – 6th graders

These camps go on two field trips per week and have an added bonus of amenities such as swimming pools and action-packed game rooms. A recreation center membership or daily pass is required.

Locations: Bayside, Bow Creek, Great Neck, Kempsville and Princess Anne Recreation Centers
Hours: 7 am – 6 pm
Dates: June 17 – August 23 (10 weeks)
Weekly Cost: $153 (includes a non-refundable, non-transferrable $5 registration fee and $30 deposit​)

KidzQuest Juniors rising 1st – 3rd graders  |  KidzQuest Seniors rising 4th – 6th graders

These camps go on one field trip per week and are located in select Virginia Beach City Public Elementary Schools. A recreation center membership or daily pass is not required.

Locations (8 weeks): Alanton, Kings Grant, Ocean Lakes, Providence, Red Mill
Locations (10 weeks): Christopher Farms, Kempsville, Kempsville Meadows, Rosemont Forest, Windsor Oaks
Hours: 7 am – 6 pm

Refrigeration and microwaves are not available at school sites. Sneakers are required to participate.

These camps go on two field trips per week and are located in select Virginia Beach City Public Middle Schools. A recreation center membership or daily pass is not required.

Locations: Corporate Landing Middle & Old Donation School Middle
Hours: 7 am – 6 pm
Dates: June 24 – August 23 (9 weeks)
Weekly Cost: $109 (includes a non-refundable, non-transferrable $5 registration fee and $10 deposit)​​

Recreation Center Teen​​ rising 7th – 9th graders

These camps go on three field trips per week and have an added bonus of amenities such as swimming pools and action-packed game rooms. A recreation center membership or daily pass is required.

Adventure Camp​​ rising 7th – 9th graders

This fun and energetic specialty camp is one week only. Each day your child will challenge themselves and learn team building skills at the Adventure Park during the first half of each day. During the second half of the day they will participate in recreational activities and field trips. Morning and afternoon snacks and lunch are needed daily. Refrigeration and microwaves are not available. Sneakers and appropriate clothing is required to participate. A detailed Itinerary and waivers will be provided closer towards camp beginning. Pick up and Drop off will be at the locations below.

Location and Dates: Strawbridge Elementary July 8 – July 12; Trantwood Elementary August 12 – August 16
Hours: 7 am – 6 pm
Cost: $295 due in full at registration (includes a non-refundable, non-transferrable $5 registration fee)

 RISE

Recreation Imagination Socialization Education: Summer Education Enrichment Program

RISE is a fun and educational summer enrichment program for rising 1st – 6th graders who attend a Virginia Beach City Public School. The program features enriching experiences and activities emphasizing Math, Science or Literacy as well as the key elements of RISE: Recreation, Imagination, Socialization, and Education. Participants receive breakfast and lunch each day and will go on one field trip each week beginning June 28.

Please note: RISE is a nine-week summer education enrichment program and your child will participate in all academic enrichment and recreational activities each day. We require notification in writing prior to the program beginning of any dates that may conflict with the attendance requirement. Failure to do so may result in removal from the program and/or elements of this program. 

Eligibility: Participant must currently be a Virginia Beach City Public School Student receiving Free and Reduced Lunch or have an approved Virginia Beach Parks and Recreation Fee Waiver. A copy of the Free and Reduced Lunch Letter (FARL) must be provided with the application form at the time of registration.

Dates: June 17 – August 16 (no camp July 4)
Hours: 7 am – 6 pm

    • Newtown Elementary: rising 3rd & 4th graders – Literacy or STEM

Important Registration Information

  • A RISE Summer Registration Form completed by parent/legal guardian is required
  • Legal Documentation is required for Legal Guardians
  • Your child's approved FARL is required to be submitted at registration if they do not have an approved Parks and Recreation Fee Waiver
  • You can apply or obtain a copy of your Free and Reduced Lunch Letter by logging into your child's school café account, calling the Office of Food Services between the hours of 7 am – 4 pm at 263.1101 or by e-mail vbfoods@vbschools.com
  • A non-refundable, non-transferrable registration fee and deposit of $55 is due at registration. The remaining balance is due by May 31, 2019

For camps held inside a recreation center, a current recreation center membership is needed for the duration of the camp. Please register at least one week in advance of camp start date. No camps will be held on July 4.  ​​

Basketball Clinic | Ages 6-12 | $115

Enhance your basketball skills over the summer break. Shooting, ball handling, defense, foot work, rebounding and other basketball related drills will be covered in the fun play-to-learn environment. Camp will be conducted by Mark Butts and Justin Parrish of First Colonial Boys Basketball Team.

Creative Arts Camp | Ages 6-12 | $129

There is an artist in everyone and we want to help you discover your inner Picaso or Van Gogh by exploring the world of painting and drawing through imagination and creativity . We will show you different painting and drawing techniques and share fascinating pieces of art history! If you have always wanted to be an artist or just want to express your creative side, this is your camp! Your unique works of art will be on display in our Recreation Center Art Show for family and friends to see!

Great Neck City  Builders | Ages 6-12 | $115

Design and build the city of dreams using a colossal collection of 10,000 Lego bricks! Aspiring engineers will engage in instructional and creative building while collaborating as a team. This experience will boost confidence and creativity.

Junior Golf Clinic | Ages 8-12 | $129

Learn the fundamentals of golf - swing, pitching, chipping, and putting in a fun environment. Each day is filled with practice, games and a little competition. Camp includes range balls, clubs if needed, camp t-shirt, awards and a completion certificate.

Lil Lacrosse  | Ages 5-8 | $115

Cox Lacrosse Team members will coach the basics of Lacrosse and teach kids skills in team work and leadership. Kids will play games and make new friends while learning a new sport. Lacrosse sticks and ball are provided.
Great Neck Rec Center • August 12 – August 16

Magic Camp | Ages 6-12 | $145

Campers will learn amazing magic tricks, all conducted by Vertical Kids Entertainment. This camp also builds self-confidence in a fun, learning environment. Campers will learn magic, juggling, and balloon twisting. On Friday, campers will perform the tricks and skills learned in a Magic Show for family and friends!

Nerf Battle, Sports and More Camp | Ages 6-12 | $115

Enjoy the game of Nerf Battle along with a host of other sports...this camp is all about FUN! Participate in a variety of sports games each day, including nerf, basketball, football, pickleball and much more.

Nothing but Nets Camp | Ages 6-12 | $115

The Nothing but Nets Camp will provide children with the opportunity to have fun while learning the basic skills for a variety of sports that include nets!
Princess Anne Rec Center • July 29 – August 2

Tennis Camp | Ages 7-14 | $115

This USTA-sponsored tennis camp will help new or novice youth participants develop tennis fundamentals (e.g. groundstrokes, volley, serve) through a fun play-to-learn style of learning tennis. Participants also practice match play and learn about sportsmanship and game rules. The camp utilizes different court sizes and modified tennis equipment for youth to rally in no time. Notes: Racquets will be provided unless campers want to bring their own. Recommend appropriate athletic wear and tennis shoes, towel, and water bottle. In the event of inclement weather, tennis camps will move inside the Great Neck Recreation Center.

The World of Fashion Camp  | Ages 10-16 | $129

Learn how to sew and explore the world of fashion! In this program young fashionistas will have the opportunity to dive into the marvelous world of fashion! Campers will engage in fabric selection, understanding measurements, proper cutting techniques, and design some fun pieces. We will get behind a sewing machine, create color stories and share our passion for fashion all while learning the history of top tier designers. The final day will include a field trip to a real sewing studio where campers will learn first hand what a day in the life of a real designer looks like!

Back 2 Nature Camp | Ages 6-10 | $205

Get the kids outside this summer to experience the best Virginia Beach has to offer! Each day is filled with engaging outdoor recreational activities such as kayaking, fishing, hiking and archery as well as games and crafts. Campers will travel to various parks and natural areas across the city to gain hands on knowledge of our local surroundings, respect for wildlife, and an understanding of the importance of environmental stewardship.

Capturing Images in Nature  | Ages 11-17 | $105

This five-day camp is designed for inspiring photographers and videographers who love to take pictures and make videos! This is a great opportunity for promising photographers and videographers to gain some knowledge and inspiration, capturing nature at its best. Participants will learn how to operate cameras and how to create some amazing images. Participants will also learn to use green screen and incorporate music into videos. Each day will consist of a different setting as the participants will take field trips to the Back 2 Nature Camp sites at various parks and natural areas across the city to gain hands-on knowledge of our local surroundings, respect for wildlife, and an understanding of the importance of environmental stewardship. Participants will capture images of the outdoor recreational activities such as kayaking, fishing, hiking and archery as well as games and crafts. As a final project, the participants will use the studio equipment to learn the skill of editing photos and videos. Participants will create and maintain a portfolio that will showcase all of their beautifully taken images.

It's not over yet! Spend the last week before going back to school getting in some last minute fun! Campers will spend half the day in the gym playing sports and games and the other half will be spent having fun with crafts, visits to the game room, and creative projects.

Lego Camp | Ages 6-12 | $260

This Lego camp is a STEM program that partners with the "Play Well Group" and is designed to give youth the opportunity to use their imaginations and creativity while gaining valuable skills in the following areas: Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. This exciting camp will help build lifelong skills while making new friends! Each day campers build upon the skills they learned the previous day.

Magic Camp & More | Ages 6-12 | $295

Mix 101: Music and Me | Ages 11-17 | $237

This fun and interactive class is a 100% hands-on course full of STEM activities that participants aren’t even aware of! The camp begins with learning to count beats per minute, and then moves to counting bars for proper song placement and mixing. Daily field trips to local studios and theaters will keep their wheels turning as they see what happens behind the scenes. Participants will learn how to blend and mix their favorite songs, as well as a basic understanding of music styles and how to drop a song on the one. In this program, participants learn rhythm, how to count bars, and song placement. We take their passion for music and infuse it with technical knowledge so every minute is full of hands-on engagement. Participants learn the break down principles of mixing tracks such as: transitions, song structure, cross-genre mixing, and basic fundamentals, including the art of mixing. Mix 101 breaks down the fundamentals and the technique as well as the art of deejaying.

Rock-It Adventure Camp  | Ages 6-12 | $210

Rock-It Adventure Camp will feature an array of structured activities focused on Rock Climbing and adventurous camp games and activities. Campers will work on team work and build self-confidence while having fun. Campers should bring peanut free snacks and a lunch that does not require refrigeration.

VBe Better Youth Volunteer Camp | Ages 8-14 | $210

VBe Better Youth Volunteer Camp is a week long journey of community service and introduction to volunteerism throughout the City of Virginia Beach. Each camper will get a grand total of 35 hours of community service, with several different organizations, a signed letter verifying service hours, and a meaningful summer of service they will never forget! Kids should be prepared to depart from the recreation center by 8:15 am daily for field trips. Bring lunch, 2 snacks, close toed shoes, sun protection and bug spray.

 Payment, Refund & Cancellation Policy

Payment, Refund & Cancellation Policy

Most of our programs and camps require a non-refundable, non-transferrable registration fee and/or deposit at registration. The remaining balances are due according to the dates indicated on the program specific payment schedules below. All Day Break, Spring Break and Sport and Specialty Camps are due in full at the time of registration. Please note any past due balances must be paid in full before you can register.​​

If the remaining balance is not received by the due dates indicated on the payment schedules above, your child will be withdrawn from that session and/or week. Please refer to the payment policy indicated on the appropriate payment schedule. Refund and Cancellation requests must be submitted in writing by a parent/legal guardian at least 7 days prior to the start date to be eligible for a refund. Registration fees and deposits are non-refundable, non-transferrable. Requests submitted less than 7 days but prior to the start date are eligible for 50% of a refund. Approved refunds will be processed back to the payer and the payment method used to pay.

  • Cash refunds are subject to availability of funds at any recreation center
  • Check refunds can take up to 30 days to be received
  • Credit Card refunds should post within 2-3 days of being processed ​​​
