Ages 12 & up  • Learn the fundamental components of a healthy eating style taught by a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist. Find out if you are sabotaging your fitness goals with your diet. Find out how many calories, protein, fat, you need to lose weight, maintain weight or gain muscle not fat in your diet prescription. How to evaluate your present eating style and fix it. Reading and Understanding Food Labels and How they apply to me. Eating for Performance, Weight Loss or Gaining Lean Muscle. Discussion on dietary supplements, fad diets, what to look at when choosing to use a supplement or in trying a diet. These are just some of the things you will learn and gain from this program.

 Drop-In Group Fitness

​​We offer a variety of drop-in group fitness classes to meet your busy schedule including Zumba®, Pilates, TRX®, tabata, yoga, SilverSneakers®, MixxedFit® and Les Mills' BODYPUMP™, CXWORX™ and more!

​Group Fitness classes are offered at all recreation centers and require a group fitness pass and a membership card. Cards and passes can be purchased at any recreation center.​

  • Re​member to wear comfortable, breathable clothing and appropriate shoes. We recommend bringing an exercise mat, pad or large towel for floor work.
  • All centers have a limited amount of equipment available. Participation is on a first come, first served basis. 
  • Group Fitness participants must be age 14 or older. Those age 12 & 13 may participate if supervised by an adult.​​​​​​

 Personal Training

​​Personal training is a specific program designed to meet each individual’s needs and includes personal coaching and one-on-one instruction throughout the workout. Our nationally certified personal trainers will design an individualized fitness program that will help you achieve your personal goals.​

Virginia Beach Parks & Recreation offers personal training at many of our recreation centers. Sessions are 30 or 60 minutes in length and are scheduled at the convenience of the member(s) and trainer. We​ also offer personal training with a partner or group as an economical alternative to individual training.

Team Training for 3 to 5 People | 60 Minute Sessions

Offers a small group environment where you can excel and take your training to the next level at a fraction of the cost of personal training. Benefit from certified, professional trainers to meet your personal needs with ongoing accountability from your trainer and fellow group members. | $150/person​​ for 8 sessions

Team Training for 6 to 9 People | 60 Minute Sessions

Our trainers will design a special program to meet the needs of your group. Get as intense of a workout as you and your group desire with the guidance of our certified, professional trainers! | $120/person for 8 sessions

​Note: Personal training session refunds will only be given within six months of the date issued. Cancellations must be received at least 24 hours in advance.

Nutritional Counseling

​Meet with one of our Fitness Nutrition specialists to analyze your diet and help you get to where you want to be! The 4 and 8 session package will include a food journal. Get healthy from the inside out! | Available at Princess Anne and Williams Farm Recreation Centers​

 Registered Classes

​​​Registered class​es are listed in our quarterly Programs & Activities Catalog and do require advanced registration. Classes are available both in our recreation centers and at outdoor locations throughout the city. Classes held at recreation centers require a membership card or a day pass, but outdoor classes do not. Registration can be done online​ or in person at any recreation center.

These classes include: boot camps, dance classes, martial arts, kettlebells, TRX® and youth fitness.​

Diane has spent 30 years in the fitness industry designing, developing and implementing fitness and wellness programs. She has worked for several not-for-profit organizations, private sector gyms and within the medical community as a rehabilitative exercise specialist. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in Recreation and Leisure Studies, with an emphasis in corporate wellness from Shepherd University and completed graduate level coursework in Exercise Science and Wellness at Old Dominion University. Diane loves to be outdoors whether she is gardening, biking or camping. After playing disc golf since the early 1990’s, she has finally received a PDGA (Professional Disc Golf Association) number.
Diane's Personal Fitness Philosophy: “I am a lifelong learner and ever-evolving wellness professional. My goal is to inspire others, and provide opportunities and tools to help them find their own state of well-being.”

Janessa is a graduate of Iowa State University where she got her B.S. in Kinesiology and Health and minor in Health Promotion. She has experience in teaching a wide variety of group fitness classes and working with diverse populations in the personal training setting. She is also enthusiastic about creating health and wellness incentive programs for behavior change to keep fitness fun and engaging. Outside of work, Janessa enjoys mountain biking, woodworking, cooking and traveling. Janessa has a passion for helping others lead healthy lifestyles.

At 15 years old Alan bought and started using an ab wheel out of curiosity, and the rest is history. "Fitness is my life. " Now with over 12 years of experience teaching group fitness, he loves helping others fall in love with movement and find a better version of themselves through fitness. Alan brings fitness to the world teaching Les Mills BODYFLOW, BODYPUMP, and CXWORX, freestyle cardio/strength/core/boot camp classes, SilverSneakers formats, and FiTOUR® water classes. He enjoys taking Zumba when he's feeling brave and not busy tending to his dog Winston​, working out on his own, at the beach, or cruising around in his car with no destination.

Laurie brings 20 years of fitness experience to the Virginia Beach Parks and Recreation Fitness Department. Her fitness career includes teaching a wide variety of formats, personal training, program creation, and fitness management.  Laurie is a Richmond native and Virginia Tech graduate who also enjoys running, kayaking, and paddleboarding with her family when she is not motivating others to find their healthy, happy self.

Ray is an avid seeker of learning how to move better and presenting this in an effective way. A graduate of the University of Maryland with degrees in Neurobiology/Physiology and Art, his training techniques have been focused on rehabilitational and Injury prevention. During free time Ray likes to keep up with his own fitness routine and keep up with his Graphic Design skills. Ray is also a foodie who enjoys cooking and eating of new types of food.

Lisa has more than 20 years of experience teaching group fitness classes and personal training clients. She also has experience managing group fitness programs with over 100 instructors at multiple locations. She has taught and trained in many group fitness formats with a focus on incorporating Les Mills programs into the Hampton Roads area over the last 14 years. Lisa is passionate about helping others achieve their goals. This passion was fueled even more so after the birth of her son, William, who wakes up every day challenging Cerebral Palsy. He serves as a reminder that the joy of life is in the journey.

Ronnie grew up loving to dance and participated in all types of sports including track, swimming and even becoming a majorette in high school. Outside of school, she would sometimes attend Jazzercise class with her mom and sister. On occasion, the instructor would allow her to assist with leading classes. The instructor saw the fierce talent and passion that Ronnie had for fitness, so to her surprise, she paid for Ronnie to get her group fitness certification as a Christmas gift! ​Over the past 20 years, Ronnie has been fortunate to meet and change many lives through her dedication and drive to helping others achieve their goals.

Kelly attended California University of Pennsylvania, where she earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Sports Management with a minor in Biology before going on to complete her Master’s Degree in Exercise Science and Health Promotion.  While at Cal U, she was an All-American setter for the Vulcan Volleyball team, where she and her teammates made a total of 2 NCAA DII Elite-8 and 5 sweet-sixteen appearances and captured 3 conference championship titles from 2008-2012. 

Her passion lies in improving the lives of others through physical fitness, healthy eating and positive lifestyle changes. One of her favorite feelings is knowing the work she does helps to better the lives of those she works with, and that clients are able to do things they once couldn’t and start to see their hard work pay off.

Tony has 25 years with the Park and Recreation department. He has worked in the Athletic, Fitness, and Personal Training divisions. This experience and training in related fields like the SilverSneakers senior fitness programs, aquatic fitness classes, coaching,​ and his love for outdoor recreation lets him successfully program for youth, adults and seniors.  In his time away from the rec center, Tony enjoys surfing, fishing, boating and more surfing.

Kim has 30 years of experience in the fitness industry, ranging from instructor to supervisor level. Kim teaches a wide range of fitness classes from Silver Sneakers to a hard HIIT class that utilizes kettlebells, steps and flex bars. Her certifications include Barre, Reebok Step, Yoga, Kettlebells and Aqua. Kim enjoys nothing more than attending a challenging Yoga class with her two daughters and occasionally her son and husband. After selling the business she managed for 25 years, Kim has found a home at Princess Anne Recreation Center where she puts her years of experience to good use helping the center’s patrons reach their fitness goals.

Rodney has been in the fitness and wellness business for over 25 years. He is a Nationally Qualified Competitive Body Builder and Classic Physique Competitor. Rodney has been coaching, training, and competing for the better part of 25 years. He enjoys strength and conditioning training, as well as fitness, team and group programming.

Paula Couto is an enabler for better health and well-being. She graduated with a degree in psychology and has over a decade of experience in fitness. Paula is known for her holistic approach to fitness. She is certified to teach BODYPUMP™, yoga, cycle, and aqua classes.
