Little Island Park

​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​Little Island Park is a 122-acre beach park in Sandbridge, just north of Back Bay Wildlife Refuge. The park has a 775-foot beach north of the 400-foot fishing pier for surfing and a 2,000-foot beach for swimming and fishing south of the pier. Back Bay, a brackish lake, provides excellent fishing and crabbing along the western border of this unique park. ​

Cigarette Litter Prevention Program​​

Did you know that cigarette butts are the most frequently littered item? During a recent beach scan, 388 cigarette butts were collected at Little Island Park. Remember to use appropriate receptacles to help keep our community clean, green and beautiful! Learn more about the program​​

Beach Wheelchairs

Three beach wheelchairs are available on a first come, first served basis. Please visit the park office to check one out with a driver license or photo ID. Wheelchairs must remain on-site.​

Equipment Available for Check Out

The following items can be checked out of the park office with a driver license or other form of photo identification: badminton equipment, basketballs, baseball bats, corn hole boards and bags, footballs, frisbees, rubber playground balls, soccer balls, volleyballs and volleyball nets.

Lifeguards
Lifeguards are on duty daily from 9:30 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. from Memorial Day to Labor Day.

*The 9:00 p.m. closing time does not apply to picnic shelter reservations. Shelters are for day use only.​​

  • Park operating hours indicate the times when facility parking lot gates, restrooms, offices, and other park amenities are opened and closed daily. All times are subject to change without notice or as posted and are dependent on scheduled special events and rentals at the facility.
  • All unstaffed community and neighborhood parks are available for use from sunrise to sunset daily. All day-use parks are posted as no trespassing after dark.
  • Parks and park facilities with lighted amenities will stay open until 11:00 p.m. between April 1 and November 30 to support city-sponsored leagues and programs as well as scheduled events and rentals.​​​

 Fishing Pier

​The 400 foot Little Island Fishing Pier is open seven days a week. Enjoy a newly improved pier walkway/railing, enhanced public access, and a new 200 linear foot pier-shoreline connection. Virginia Saltwater Fishing License is not required on the Fishing Pier, but is required to fish from the beach. Visitors must provide their own fishing equipment (maximum of four fishing poles per person​). Only service dogs are permitted on the pier. Pier fees are charged May - October.

Fishing Pier Fees:

  • ​Sightseeing: $1 resident / $2 non-resident
  • Fishing: $8 resident / $10 non-resident
  • Weekly pier fishing pass: $25 resident / $35 non-resident
  • Annual pier fishing pass: $100 resident / $125 non-resident​

*Children 9 and under are free with paying adult (for fishing). Cash payment accepted only. Fees can be paid at the fishing pier​.​

Once paid, you are free to come and go all day as parking is monitored via your license plate number.

 Dogs on the Beach

​Dogs are welcome to enjoy the beach anytime after Labor Day weekend and before Memorial Day weekend.

From the Friday before Memorial Day through Labor Day weekend, dogs are allowed prior to 10 am or after 6 pm.
