Stumpy Lake Natural Area

Located along the south-central City boundary with Chesapeake, Stumpy Lake Natural Area consists of 1,422 acres including a 278-acre lake with a raised ADA compliant overlook, 174-acre golf course, 970+ acres of undeveloped, forested land surrounding the lake and 1.65 miles of soft shared-use trails.
Kayak rentals will not be available at Stumpy Lake September 18th & 19th. Rentals will be available September 25th and 26th which will be the last weekend rentals are available this season. We plan to begin having rentals again May, 2022. Please continue to check our social media pages for further information.

​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​As a valuable aesthetic resource, the area offers opportunity for passive recreational uses, such as hiking, fishing, bird watching, nature observation and photography. The 1,422-acre property was acquired in 2001 from the City of Norfolk​.
 
A canoe/kayak launch is located just after the causeway from Indian River Road near the entrance to the Stumpy Lake Golf Course. Designed for non-motorized vessels, the launch is also fully ADA compliant. There is a small picnic shelter nearby. Parking spaces are available for 12 cars and two trailers.

 Boating & Fishing

  • Fishing from land and water is permitted with a Virginia Freshwater Fishing License (fishing from golf course property is not permitted)
  • Motorized vessels are not permitted
  • Watercraft must be launched from canoe/kayak launch
  • Swimming is prohibited
  • Stand up paddle boarding is permitted​

  • Dogs are welcome, but must be kept on a leash

  • ​​Park operating hours indicate the times when facility parking lot gates, restrooms, offices, and other park amenities are opened and closed daily. All times are subject to change without notice or as posted and are dependent on scheduled special events and rentals at the facility.
  • All unstaffed community and neighborhood parks are available for use from sunrise to sunset daily. All day-use parks are posted as no trespassing after dark.
  • Parks and park facilities with lighted amenities will stay open until 11:00 p.m. between April 1 and November 30 to support city-sponsored leagues and programs as well as scheduled events and rentals.​​​
