Aquatics Positions​ - Coach, Instructor and Lifeguard ​Jobs

Coaches - Springboard Diving, Swim & Water Polo

  • Coach and instruct swim, dive, or specialized aquatic programs while providing a safe swimming instructional environment. Other responsibilities include enforcing rules and administering CPR when necessary.
  • Minimum Requirements: 
    • ​Age 16 or older; possession of a current certification or experience appropriate to the specialized program area, i.e., competitive swimming, diving, or specialized aquatic instruction. 
    • Successfully complete departmental swimming skills test prior to employment.
    • Must obtain American Red Cross CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer within 30 days of employment.

  • Provide a safe swimming environment for patrons utilizing the pools at Community Recreation Centers by enforcing rules and providing rescue services.
  • Minimum Requirements: 
    • Age 16 or older; possession of a current lifeguard and CPR/AED certification from a national, industry or locally recognized lifeguard certification organization.  
    • ​Successfully complete departmental swimming skills test prior to employment.
    • Must obtain American Red Cross Lifeguarding and CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer within 30 days of employment. 

Water Safety Instructor​

  • Demonstrate and instruct swimming skills to youth and adults in American Red Cross Water Safety Programs and other non-competitive swimming classes.
  • Minimum Requirements:  
    • ​Age 16 or older; possession of a current American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor certification to instruct preschool, adult, and American Red Cross aquatic programs; or must possess valid American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor certification to teach ARC Lifeguard/First Aid/CPR/AED/O2
    • Successfully complete departmental swimming skills test prior to employment.
    • ​Must obtain American Red Cross Lifeguarding and CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer within 30 days of employment.

Athletics Positions​ - Scorer, Timer and Sports Programming Jobs

Parks and Recreation Aide I - Basketball

  • ​Accurately record statistics and scores for recreation league games, operate an electronic score clock, assist with facility operations such as equipment setup and breakdown, and provide quality customer service to players, coaches and spectators. This is a seasonal position limited to the months of January and February.
  • Minimum Requirements: Applicants must be 16 years old with some high school education and possess knowledge of the game and rules of basketball.

Parks and Recreation Aide I and III - Sports Management​

  • Oversee, lead and assist in the implementation of athletic programming, including the supervision of athletic facilities.
  • ​Minimum Requirements: Applicants must be 18 years old with either a high school diploma, GED, certification in a related field, or have at least six months experience in a related field such as athletic coaching or teaching.

Fitness & Wellness Positions - Personal Trainer and Instructor Jobs

Fi​tness Instructor ​

  • ​​Plan, execute and instruct fitness in a variety of formats such as Les Mills BODYPUMP™, Yoga, Pilates, Tai Chi, Zumba® and TRX®.
  • Assist with recreation center fitness and wellness program management.
  • Minimum Requirements: Applicants must have three months experience in program instruction and possess related certifications.

Personal and Small Group Trainer

  • ​​Conduct one on one and/or small group training in our recreation centers.
  • Minimum Requirements: Applicants must have at least six months experience conducting personal training sessions​. Related certifications are also required.​​

Inclusion Services Positions​ - Special Needs ​Support Jobs

​Parks and Recreation Aide III/Special Needs Support Staff

  • Facilitate the inclusion of individuals with special needs in recreation programs using minimal adaptive techniques and assist with behavior challenges, daily living skills and friendships with peers without disabilities.
  • Minimum Requirements: Applicants must be 18 years old with some high school education and at least six months experience in a related field.​

Out-of-School Time Programs Positions - Childcare Jobs

Activity Center Assistant Leader

  • Assist in the planning, leading and supervision of age-appropriate activities for youth including arts and crafts, games, sports and special events.
  • Minimum Requirements: Applicants must be at least 18 years old with a high school diploma or GED, and have at least three months related experience.​

Activity Center Leader

  • ​Plan, lead and supervise age-appropriate activities for youth including arts and crafts, games, sports and special events. Supervise part-time staff and volunteers.
  • Minimum Requirements: Applicant must be at least 21 years old with a high school diploma or GED, and have six months staff supervisory experience and three years programmatic experience in group care of children/youth or advance studies such as 48 semester hours of college credit and six months programmatic experience in group care of children/youth.​

Parks Positions - Maintenance and Customer Service Jobs

Parks and Recreation Aide​ I and III

  • Work outdoors in one of our great parks! Maintain grounds, structures and park amenities, collect revenue, enforce park rules and regulations, and distribute equipment for use in the park. Provide a clean and safe environment, answer inquiries, and direct patrons to desired locations.
  • Minimum Requirements for Parks and Recreation Aide I: Applicants must be 16 years old with some high school education. Three months experience in a related field such as lawn care service, construction or customer service is preferred. Must possess a valid VA or NC driver’s license.​
  • Minimum Requirements for Parks and Recreation Aide III: Applicants must be 16 years old with a high school diploma or GED. Six months experience in a related field such as lawn care service, construction or customer service is preferred in addition to supervisory experience of volunteers or employees. Must possess a valid VA or NC driver’s license.​

Recreation Center Positions​ - Programming, Instructor and Customer Service Jobs

Parks and Recreation Aide II

  • ​​Assist customers and center staff with diversified recreational programs and services including special events, tournaments, and leading and monitoring structured and unstructured programs. Enforce facility policies and procedures, and transport program participants.
  • Minimu​m Requirements: Applicants must be 18 years old with either a high school diploma, GED or at least three months experience related to job description.

Recreation Class Instructor

  • ​Individual plans, executes and instructs recreational classes in specialized programs such as dance and martial arts.
  • Minimum Requirements: Applicants must have three years experience in a specialized interest or skill including one year of teaching, or five years experience in the subject, or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.​

Facility Customer Assistant

  • ​Help customers with administrative needs by performing clerical, cashier and customer relations duties.
  • Minimum Requirements: Applicants must be 18 years old with either a high school diploma, GED, certification in a related field or at least six months experience in a related field such as a clerk typist or cashier.​

Therapeutic Recreation Program Positions - Special Needs Support Jobs

Activity Center Aide​

  • Assist individuals with disabilities to participate in recreation programs and provide assistance with daily living skills.
  • Minimum Requirements: Applicants should have some high school education and at least 240 hours of experience in a related field such as babysitting or volunteering with people with disabilities.​

Activity Center Assistant Leader - Therapeutic Recreation

  • ​​Provide diversified programming for a variety of disability groups while assisting with daily living skills.
  • Minimum Requirements: Applicants must be 18 years old with a high school diploma or GED and have at least three months experience in leading group activities and working with people with disabilities.​

Activity Center Leader - Therapeutic Recreation

  • Plan, lead and evaluate recreation programs making adaptations as needed for a variety of disability groups and provide assistance with daily living skills.
  • Minimum Requirements: Applicants must be 18 years old with a high school diploma or GED and have at least six months experience as a program leader working with individuals with disabilities.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​
