Virginia Beach Parks & Recreation will be hosting a Job Fair at Bow Creek Recreation Center on February 27, 2020, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. We will be recruiting for part-time spring and summer jobs for various departments such as Aquatics, Athletics, Fitness, Clerical, Parks, Landscape, Recreation Center, Support Staff, Special Needs, Facility Management, Therapeutic Recreation, Youth Programs and Camps.

Aquatics Positions​ - Coach, Instructor & Lifeguard ​Jobs

Lifeguard Instructor or Coach (Springboard Diving, Swim & Water Polo)

  • Coach and instruct swim, dive, or specialized aquatic programs while providing a safe swimming instructional environment. Other responsibilities include enforcing rules and administering CPR when necessary.
  • Minimum Requirements: 
    • ​Age 16 or older; possession of a current certification or experience appropriate to the specialized program area, i.e., competitive swimming, diving, or specialized aquatic instruction. 
    • Successfully complete departmental swimming skills test prior to employment.
    • Must obtain American Red Cross CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer within 30 days of employment.

  • Provide a safe swimming environment for patrons utilizing the pools at Community Recreation Centers by enforcing rules and providing rescue services.
  • Minimum Requirements: 
    • Age 16 or older; possession of a current lifeguard and CPR/AED certification from a national, industry or locally recognized lifeguard certification organization.  
    • ​Successfully complete departmental swimming skills test prior to employment.
    • Must obtain American Red Cross Lifeguarding and CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer within 30 days of employment. 

Water Safety Instructor​

  • Demonstrate and instruct swimming skills to youth and adults in American Red Cross Water Safety Programs and other non-competitive swimming classes.
  • Minimum Requirements:  
    • ​Age 16 or older; possession of a current American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor certification to instruct preschool, adult, and American Red Cross aquatic programs; or must possess valid American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor certification to teach ARC Lifeguard/First Aid/CPR/AED/O2
    • Successfully complete departmental swimming skills test prior to employment.
    • ​Must obtain American Red Cross Lifeguarding and CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer within 30 days of employment.

Parks and Recreation Aide I - Sports Management

  • Assist the supervisor with athletic programs and sporting events including but not limited to scorekeeping, event set-up, rule enforcement, custodial duties and facility oversight. 
  • ​Minimum Requirements: Applicants must be 16 years old with some high school education and any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. 

Parks and Recreation Aide I and III - Sports Management​

Fitness & Wellness - Personal Trainer & Instructor Jobs

Fi​tness Instructor ​

  • ​​Plan, execute and instruct fitness in a variety of formats such as Les Mills BODYPUMP™, Yoga, Pilates, Tai Chi, Zumba® and TRX®.
  • Assist with recreation center fitness and wellness program management.
  • Minimum Requirements: Applicants must have three months experience in program instruction and possess related certifications.

Aquatics - Fitness Instructor

  • ​Plan, execute and instruct aquatic fitness classes. 
  • Assist with recreation center fitness and wellness program management. 
  • Minimum Requirements: Applicants must have three months of experience in program instruction and possess related certifications.

Personal and Small Group Trainer

  • ​​Conduct one on one and/or small group training in our recreation centers.
  • Minimum Requirements: Applicants must have at least six months experience conducting personal training sessions and possess related certification​.

Activity Center Aide - Special Needs Support Staff

  • Assist in the accommodations, planning and supervision of age-appropriate activities for youth including arts and crafts, games, sports and special events. 
  • Minimum Requirements: Some high school or GED, 16 years or older, plus at least 240 hours of related volunteer work experience with disabilities in youth-related programs such as babysitting, camps, church groups, scouting coaching, etc.; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. 

Activity Center Assistant Leader - Special Needs Support Staff

  • ​Facilitate the inclusion of individuals with special needs in recreation programs using minimal adaptive techniques and assist with behavior challenges, daily living skills and friendships with peers without disabilities. 
  • Minimum Requirements: Applicants must be at least 18 years old, HSD/GED and 3 months experience in a related field. 

Out-of-School Time Programs Positions - Childcare Jobs

Activity Center Aide

  • Assist in the planning, and supervision of age-appropriate activities for youth including arts and crafts, games, sports and special events. 
  • Minimum Requirements: Some high school or GED. 16 years or older, plus at least 240 hours of related volunteer or work experience in youth-related programs such as babysitting, camps, church groups,  scouting, coaching, etc.; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

  • ​Plan, lead and supervise age-appropriate activities for youth including arts and crafts, games, sports and special events. Supervise part-time staff and volunteers.
  • Minimum Requirements: Applicant must be at least 21 years old with a high school diploma or GED, and have six months staff supervisory experience and three years programmatic experience in group care of children/youth or advance studies such as 48 semester hours of college credit and six months programmatic experience in group care of children/youth.​

Parks & Landscape Positions - Maintenance & Customer Service Jobs

Parks and Recreation Aide​ I 

  • Work outdoors in one of our great parks! Maintain ground, structures and park amenities, collect revenue, enforce park rules and regulations, and distribute equipment for use in the park. Provide a clean and safe environment, answer inquiries, and direct patrons to desired locations. 
  • Minimum Requirements: Applicants must be 16 years old with some high school education. Three months experience in a related field such as lawn care service, construction or customer service is preferred. May need to possess a valid VA or NC drivers license. 

Recreation Center Positions​ - Programming, Instructor & Customer Service Jobs

Parks and Recreation Aide II

  • Assist customers and center staff with diversified recreational programs and services including special events, tournaments, fitness rooms and leading and monitoring structured and unstructured programs. Enforce facility policies and procedures, and transport program participants. 
  • Minimum Requirements: Applicants must be 18 years old with either a high school diploma, GED or at least three months experience related to job description. 

Parks & Recreation Aide III​

  • Assist customers and center staff with planning, implementing and supervising diversifies monitoring structured and unstructured programs. Enforce facility policies and procedures, and transport program participants. 
  • Minimum Requirements: Applicants must be 18 years old with either a high school diploma, GED or at least six months experience related to job description. 

Parks & Recreation Aide IV
  • Recreation Center - Assist customer and center staff with planning, implementing and supervising diversified recreational programs and services including special events, tournaments and leading and monitoring structured and unstructured programs. Enforce facility policies and procedures and transport program participants.  
  • Font Desk - Provide customer service and assistance for the recreation center front desk via telephone, email and walk-ins; monitor membership scanning at the scan desk, provide facility tours; assist with supervision of part-time employees and volunteers. 

Facility Customer Assistant

  • ​Help customers with administrative needs by performing clerical, cashier and customer relations duties.
  • Minimum Requirements: Applicants must be 18 years old with either a high school diploma, GED, certification in a related field or at least six months experience in a related field such as a clerk typist or cashier.​

Therapeutic Recreation Program Positions - Special Needs Support Jobs

Activity Center Aide​

  • Assist individuals with disabilities to participate in recreation programs and provide assistance with daily living skills.
  • Minimum Requirements: Applicants should have some high school education and at least 240 hours of experience in a related field such as babysitting or volunteering with people with disabilities.​

Activity Center Assistant Leader - Therapeutic Recreation

  • ​​Provide diversified programming for a variety of disability groups while assisting with daily living skills.
  • Minimum Requirements: Applicants must be 18 years old with a high school diploma or GED and have at least three months experience in leading group activities and working with people with disabilities.​

Activity Center Leader - Therapeutic Recreation

  • Plan, lead and evaluate recreation programs making adaptations as needed for a variety of disability groups and provide assistance with daily living skills.
  • Minimum Requirements: Applicants must be 18 years old with a high school diploma or GED and have at least six months experience as a program leader working with individuals with disabilities.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​
