Aquatics Opportunities​*

Lifeguard

  • Responsibilities:  Provide a safe swimming environment for patrons utilizing the pools at Community Recreation Centers.  Enforce rules, perform rescues, and administer CPR and First Aid when necessary.
  • Minimum Requirements:
    • Age 15 or older; possess current lifeguard and CPR/AED certification from a national, industry or locally recognized lifeguard certification organization.  
    • Successful completion of departmental swimming skills test prior to employment.
  • If current certification is not American Red Cross Lifeguarding, employees must obtain certification within 30 days of employment.

Aquatic Instructor - Water Safety Instructor

  • Responsibilities:  Demonstrate and instruct swimming skills to youth and adults in American Red Cross Water Safety programs and other non-competitive swimming classes.
  • Minimum Requirements:
    • Age 16 or older; possess a current American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor certification to instruct preschool, adult, and American Red Cross Learn to Swim programs.
    • Successful completion of departmental swimming skills test prior to employment.
  • Must obtain American Red Cross CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer within 30 days of employment.

Aquatic Instructor - Lifeguard Training Instructor

  • Responsibilities:  Instruct American Red Cross Lifeguarding classes.
  • Minimum Requirements:  
    • Age 17 or older; possess a current American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Instructor certification to instruct lifeguarding classes.
    • Successful completion of departmental swimming skills test prior to employment.

Aquatic Instructor - Coach (Swim, Springboard Diving & Water Polo)

  • Responsibilities:  Coach swim, dive or water polo aquatic programs while providing a safe learning environment.  Enforce rules and administer CPR and First Aid when necessary. 
  • Minimum Requirements:
    • Age 16 or older; experience in specialized aquatic program areas, i.e., competitive swimming, springboard diving, or water polo instruction.
    • Successful completion of departmental swimming skills test prior to employment.
  • Must obtain American Red Cross CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer within 30 days of employment.

 Lifeguard Training

Our lifeguard course teaches students lifeguarding skills to prevent and respond to aquatic emergencies. The course is 34 hours in length including the eligibility swim. To pass the course you must attend all classes, correctly demonstrate all skills, pass two written tests, and successfully complete final water skills scenarios.  

This course is also offered as Blended Learning with live instructor-led class sessions and asynchronous online components. 

Prerequisites: Must be 15 years old before the end of the class session and must pass eligibility swim. Eligibility swim consists of 300 m/y continuous swim of front crawl and breaststroke; 20 m/y 10 lb. brick retrieval and tow; and 2 minutes treading water, legs only.

Certification: American Red Cross Lifeguarding/First Aid and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer 

 Water Safety Instructor Training

Water Safety Instructor Training

Our water safety instructor course trains students to teach American Red Cross swim classes. The course is 32 hours in length including the eligibility swim. To pass the course you must attend all classes, pass all practice teaching assignments and score 80% or above on the final written test.

Prerequisite: Must be 16 years old and pass eligibility swim. Eligibility swim consists of 25-yards/meters front crawl, back crawl, breaststroke, elementary backstroke, sidestroke, and 15-yards/meters butterfly.  Must also tread water and float on back for one minute each.
