All volunteer positions require:

    • Completed and signed volunteer application and confidentiality agreement.
    • An interview and orientation/training.
    • Background check for anyone 18 years or older.

 Kids

At this time there are no youth volunteer opportunities with the Virginia Beach Public Library. Please visit the Office of Volunteer Resources page for other opportunities in the City of Virginia Beach.

Position Details

Tween Advisory Council Volunteer

    • Must be in grades 3 to 5.
    • Will serve in leadership roles within the tween group.
    • Drive the direction of tween programming.
    • Advise on library collection and services.
    • May assist library staff with younger children and families.
    • Volunteer positions serve one year terms.

Position Details

Archives Volunteer

    • Must be at least 15 years old.
    • Assist library staff by helping to scan, organize and preserve materials like photographs, historical documents, and maps.
    • May assist with curating library displays.
    • Earn volunteer hours and boost your college applications.
Locations and schedule: Meyera E. Oberndorf Central Library, flexible hours available Monday-Thursday 8 a.m.-8 p.m., Friday-Saturday 8 a.m.-5 p.m.




Teen Advisory Group (TAG) Volunteer

  • Must be between the ages of 12-17.
  • Assist library staff with planning and implementation of relevant teen-oriented and community-based programs, services and resources.
  • Assist staff with programs for both on and off-site locations.
  • Earn volunteer hours and boost your college applications.
Locations and schedule: Meyera E. Oberndorf Central Library, 3rd Thursday of every month from 6-7:30 p.m.; Pungo-Blackwater Library, 1st Saturday of every month from 1:30-2:30 p.m.

Reading Buddies

    • Must be between the ages of 14-17.
    • Mentor beginning readers, grades K to 3, through the Reading Buddies Program.
    • Reading Buddies is a 4-week reading program that combines reading encouragement and group activities to foster a love of reading and confidence.

 Adults

Position Details

Archives Volunteer

English Conversation Club

    • Must be (18) years of age and up.
    • Help all levels of non-native speakers gain confidence in speaking English to communicate effectively.
    • Lead small conversations and activity groups and talks one-on-one with participants about various topics.
    • Ability to effectively communicate as a native speaker of English, including skilled in active listening.
    • Knowledge of and interest in people of diverse backgrounds and cultures.
    • Knowledge of library resources.
    • Has an ESL or ESOL background and/or experience working with diverse populations.

Location and schedule:  Joint-Use Library, Tuesdays 2:15-3:45 p.m. Must be able to attend training and quarterly planning sessions.

 Court-Ordered Community Service

Virginia Beach Public Library accepts volunteer applications from minors who are seeking to complete court-ordered community service.

    • Applicants must be between the ages of 12-17.
    • Applicants must apply at least eight (8) weeks prior to the deadline for completion of service hours.
    • Applicants should include the number of community services hours needed and the deadline for completion.
    • If applicable, only applicants who are on unsupervised probation will be considered.
    • We will not consider applicants who are seeking community service hours for larceny offenses.

Approval of all court-ordered applicants will be at the discretion of the Volunteer Services Coordinator.
