Summer Reading Challenge

Read books, have fun, win prizes! VBPL's annual Summer Reading Challenge encourages children and teens to read throughout the summer months to help beat summer slide, the loss of reading skills that can occur during summer break.

Sign Up or Log In to Beanstack 

Read whatever you want - it all counts!  Short books, long books, magazines, comic books, newspapers in print or digital formats, audiobooks too! ​​​​​​​​​​​​VBPL's Summer Reading Challenge is powered by Beanstack reading tracking software. If you have created a Beanstack account for a previous reading program, you do not need to create a new one. Click "forgot your password" if you need assistance signing in.​ Use Beanstack to log your titles and you'll also receive recommended reads.

In addition to Summer Reading Challenge, you may also participate in two year-round reading programs at VBPL using Beanstack: ​Adults Read!  (ages 18-up) and 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten (ages birth to five).

Reading Incentives

  • 5 books - Free book
  • 10, 20 and 40 books - Prize wheel spin
  • 50 books - Select a "Super Prize" of your choice

Super Reader Badge

  • Read for 20 minutes a day, 5 days every week this summer and unlock an invitation to the Super Reader Celebration at the Virginia Aquarium on Thursday, Aug. 15, 6:30 - 8:30 p.m.


​Reading Incentives

  • 1 book - Community pass/food coupon
  • 3 books - Free admission for you +1 (teens only) to VBPL's Teen Night @ the Virginia Aquarium,  Aug. 17, 7-9 p.m.  
  • 5 books - $12 Barnes & Noble gift card
  • Every book read you read enters you into weekly raffles for a variety of cool prizes!  The more you read, the more chances you have to win.!


VBPL offers a year-round reading program, Adults Read!, that challenges readers to expand their literary horizons and to take advantage of all the library has to offer.  It's an invitation to adults who love reading to read with us! Find more details and get started!
