Update: 5th Grade Battle of the Books 2020 Finale

Given the ongoing shelter-in-place order, we have made the difficult decision to cancel the 2020 5th Grade Battle of the Books Finale. We know how much time and energy the participants have put into preparing for the event, and we did not make this decision lightly. Various options were considered, but none allowed for the equity, impartiality, and collaborative nature we require for a successful Battle of the Books competition. All Team Captains have been notified, and finale medals and certificates will be mailed to the captains directly. We hope to see all of our wonderful Battle of the Books participants at the Middle School Battle of the Books next year.

Test your Battle of the Books Knowledge

All 5th Grade Battle of the Books participants are invited to take the finale challenge at home! The Finale Battle slides are now available here for you to test your skills.

This year, VBPL expanded the Battle of the Books program with a middle school edition!  Over 50 teams, with 217 readers from 15 different schools (public, private, and homeschool) participated in the competition.  The winning team this year is the Prestigious Plaza Pages, a three-person team from Plaza Middle School.

Questions for the 2019-2020 competition came from the following books:
Lily and Dunkin by Donna Gephart
Crossover by Kwame Alexander
Roller Girl by Victoria Jamieson
Dragon Pearl by Yoon Ha Lee
The Night Diary by Veera Hiranandani

The readers voted Lily and Dunkin as their favorite, and said reading new books, team-building, friendly competition, and spending time with and meeting new friends were the highlights of the competition.

Interesting in competing? Battle of the Books 2020-2021 will launch in October of 2020.
