Battle of the Books


Compete in a game show-style reading challenge for the chance to read great books, have fun with friends and win exciting prizes. Create a team of up to five students; register at your local library and read the Battle of the Books titles. This year VBPL is hosting Fifth Grade AND Middle School competitions.

 5th Grade

*Be aware that some titles are available in annotated versions or graphic novels. All questions come from the traditional print format and these alternative formats will not be used.

 Middle School


This year, VBPL expanded the Battle of the Books program with a middle school edition!  Over 50 teams, with 217 readers from 15 different schools (public, private, and homeschool) participated in the competition.  The winning team this year is the Prestigious Plaza Pages, a three-person team from Plaza Middle School.


Questions for the 2019-2020 competition came from the following books:
Lily and Dunkin by Donna Gephart
Crossover by Kwame Alexander
Roller Girl by Victoria Jamieson
Dragon Pearl by Yoon Ha Lee
The Night Diary by Veera Hiranandani

The readers voted Lily and Dunkin as their favorite, and said reading new books, team-building, friendly competition, and spending time with and meeting new friends were the highlights of the competition.
