Research Resources - A to Z List

  • Ancestry.com - Research your family history with census data, vital records, directories, photos and more. See the Bonus Content page for a link to Ancestry access available outside the library.
  • Foundation Directory Online Professional - Profiles of private foundations, grantmaking public charities and corporate giving programs. Use this database to search for grantmakers based on their giving guidelines and stated areas of interest. See the Bonus Content page for a link to Foundation Directory Online Essential access. 
  • Foundation Grants to Individuals Online - This database provides funding sources for individuals seeking grant support for education, medical assistance, general welfare, research, or arts and cultural projects.
  • Standard & Poor's ​NetAdvantage -  Analysis and rankings on companies, industries, mutual funds and other investments. (Inside library link: Remote link below)
  • Lexis - (Not available at the TCC/City Joint-Use Library): Search legal, news and public records sources.
  • Westlaw Patron Access - (accessible at the Law Library): This legal research database includes state and federal statutes and cases, including many unpublished cases. There are limited consecutive sessions available for this resource.

Westlaw is providing temporary remote access during the COVID-19 pandemic. Submit a request for access using our Ask the Law Library form. Staff will provide you with confidential credentials during normal business hours.

America's News - Full-text articles from local and national newspapers, newsmagazines and other news sources. (Accessible for VBCPS student accounts inside the library only.)
 
America's Obituaries and Death Notices - National obituaries and death notices (1999-present). (Accessible for VBCPS student accounts inside the library only.)

Biography in Context - News and biographical information on public figures searchable by a variety of factors, including name, occupation, birth and death dates, places or gender.
 
Business Source Elite - Business research information, including company profiles, business journals and publications.

Career Online High School. ​​-  An online high school diploma and career certification program available through VBPL. This program offers free enrollment to a limited number of qualified adult students.​​ ​

Career Transitions - Explore career paths and view guidance and activities for job seekers and those investigating a career change.
Career Transistions will transition to Gale Presents: Peterson's Career Prep next Wednesday, 9/30. 
Customers will no longer be able to access Career Transitions after 9/30. Customers will need to download any resumes/cover letters saved to Career Transitions. Attached are instructions on how customers can download their information. Instructions_SaveResume_CareerTransitions.docx

Chilton Library - Vehicle maintenance and repair information, including service and repair procedures, a labor estimating tool, vacuum and wiring diagrams, photographs and illustrations.
 
Code of Virginia - Statutes, rules of the court and legal ethics opinions organized by title number and section and searchable by keyword.

Data Axle Reference Solutions (formerly Reference​ USA) - Search for companies and people in the United States.  

Demographics Now - Conduct market research with U.S. demographic data.

Directory of Open Access Books - Large collection of open access books, made available by academic publishers such as Springer and Brill.

Directory of Open Access Journals - List of free, full text, peer-reviewed scientific and scholarly online journals. Covers journals for all subjects, in all languages.

Early Learning by World Book​ - Stories, games and other activities for early literacy.

e-Book Collection by EBSCO - Nonfiction titles covering a broad range of topics.

Financial Ratings Series - Accurate, independent information and ratings for banks, insurance companies and credit unions, with additional investment ratings for stocks and mutual funds.  When asked for your Library card number, type VBPL then your card number.

Gale In Context: Elementary - K-5 parents and students, search and browse encyclopedias, pictures and magazines for a variety of topics, like animals, arts, plants, sports and more.

Gale Literary Sources - Full text of literary works, journal articles, literature criticism, reviews, author biographical information and overviews.

Gale Virtual Reference Library - View a selection of e-books on a variety of topics, including business, education and history.
