Notary Service

Please note that Notary services are not offered at this time due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

VBPL offers free notary service, by appointment, at limited library locations. You can call any branch to set up an appointment to have your documents notarized. Notary appointments are available until 30 minutes prior to the library's scheduled closing time and are subject to the schedule and availability of the location's notary public.

Current, valid photo identification for all signers is required for notary service. Any witnesses required to sign a document must be present with valid photo identification. Customers should provide their own witnesses. Library employees may substitute as witnesses, but their availability cannot be guaranteed. Library customers may not be solicited to act as witnesses.

Notary publics cannot:

  • Notarize copies of any kind
  • Notarize birth, marriage or death certificates
  • Perform marriages or any other act that constitutes the practice of law
  • Prepare legal documents or give legal advice
  • Post or pre-date a document
  • Notarize documents in a language they do not understand
