​​Renew Your Library Account

  • All fines and fees must be paid in full before a library account can be renewed.​
  • All account holders may renew their accounts in person at a VBPL branch or by phone at (757) 385-0150. 
  • Teen accounts expire when the account holder turns 18 and can be renewed as adult accounts with proof of identification and Virginia Beach residency.

Other Library Accounts

Hoopla - Create a Hoopla account with your email address, library account number and PIN to enjoy streaming music, movies, TV shows and audiobooks.

Libby -  Use your library account number and PIN to view the e-books, audiobooks and magazines on your Libby shelf, check the status of your holds and change your default settings for checkout periods. If your library account number is replaced, materials already checked out or on hold for you are not automatically transferred to a replacement library account. Please ask library staff to assist with merging in Libby. 

Computer Access and Printing - Your computer login account is created when you receive your library account. With this account, you are allotted 4 hours per day on the library's public internet computers. You can also use this account to release your print jobs at the Print Payment Terminals.

 Using Your Account

​​​​​​Checkout Limits

  • Regular, full-service library accounts allow 30 checkouts. 
  • 3 video games may be checked out to a library account at one time.
  • take-home tech items may be checked out to a library account at one time.
  • Teen library accounts allow 5 materials of any type to be checked out at one time.

Checkout Periods

  • Entertainment DVDs and telescopes may be checked out for 7 days.
  • All other materials, including take-home tech (except the telescopes)​, television series DVDs, video games and nonfiction DVDs may be checked out for 21 days.

Item Renewals

You can renew library items in the online catalog​, in person or by telephone.

Materials may be renewed up to 5 times, unless:

  • Items are on hold for another customer.
  • Your library account is blocked for address verification or fees that are greater than $10.
  • An item on your account is overdue for 30 days or longer.

Holds

Please note our Holds policy.  Highlights of our hold policy include:

  • Customers can have up to 30 holds on their record at any one time. 
  • Customers can request via the catalog, phone or in person.
  • Customers using the catalog to hold an item must have a current, unblocked library account.
    • Blocks that prohibit holds include fines over $10 and expired accounts.
  • Customers can modify their expiration date when suspending holds, which is located in the My Account tab.
  • Customers can choose which library to pick up their item.
  • Customers receive notifications of the availability of holds via email, telephone or postal mail.
  • Holds are held for 8 days. 
  • Holds must be picked up with the card used to place the holds. 

​​​​Fines and Fees

Overdue Materials

  • 25 cents per day per item: $10 maximum per item. Youth accounts are excluded from overdue fines. See FAQs on Fine Free for Kids. 
  • Interlibrary loan: 50 cents per day per item, with no maximum limit.
  • Library accounts are blocked from checking out materials once fines and fees exceed $10.

Interlibrary Loan

  • One-way postage.
  • Any insurance required by the lending institution.
  • Some items may require an additional fee.

Other Fees

  • ​Lost/stolen/damaged materials: current replacement cost.
