Behavioral Health

​Join a team of profesionnals who strive to help individuals who may be struggling with mental health issues, substance use disorders, or have other behavioral health concerns. We serve children and adults through an array of outpatient programs and services, in addition to assiting those who may be in a crisis situation.
Job candidates without personal computers or Internet access may be able to use computers at any Virginia Beach Public Library to apply for employment.

​Behavioral Health Program Positions

 Clinician

BH/DS Clinician I (FT and PT)
  • Provide person-centered treatment planning for clients who are in need of crisis stabilization and/or medication management of substance abuse and mental health needs to include client monitoring.
  • Perform necessary case management functions related to service referrals, coordination of care, monitoring/follow-up, and case documentation in accordance with quality assurance and professional client standards.
  • Minimum Requirements: Requires any combination of education (above the high school level) and/or experience equivalent to five years in positions such as Mental Health Counselor, Special Education Teacher, or Social Worker.

BH/DS Clinician II – Multiple Programs (FT and PT)

  • Develop treatment plans and complete all progress notes for assigned clients, in accordance with agency and Medicaid requirements, and meet QA standards for the City of Virginia Beach.  
  • Perform necessary case management functions related to service referrals, coordination of care, monitoring/follow-up, and case documentation in accordance with quality assurance and professional client standards.
  • Minimum Requirements: Requires a four year degree in a human services field and three years experience in fields associated with such positions as Mental Health Counselor, Special Education Teacher, or Social Worker OR any combination of education (above the high school level) and/or experience and training equivalent to seven years in related fields.

BH/DS Clinician III – Multiple Programs

  • Perform clinical assessments utilizing agency approved assessment instruments to include ongoing assessment of individuals, crisis intervention and group, individual and family counseling. 
  • Develop and maintain clear, quantified service plans, individualized to client problem/needs, goals and objectives in format approved by the Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) Department.
  • Minimum Requirements: Requires a Bachelor's degree in a human services field and five years of experience associated with such positions as clinician, counselor, therapist, social worker, psychologist or psychiatric nurse OR any combination of education (above the high school level) and/or experience equivalent to nine years associated with related positions. Must hold a valid license in Virginia as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), or Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT).

 Psychiatrist

Staff Psychiatrist – Multiple Programs
  • Provide psychiatric evaluations and medication management services to clients diagnosed with mental illness.
  • Sees clients in their homes, in the office, or remotely as needed for medication management; documents all medication orders.
  • Minimum Requirements: Licensed as a Psychiatrist in the State of Virginia, possession of a Drug Enforcement Association (DEA) Certificate with no restrictions on prescribing controlled substances. Eligibility for Medicare, Medicaid, and other third-party reimbursement.

 Nursing

Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner
  • Provide medical services to adult mental health and substance abuse population at Pathways Center and to adolescents and children at the Juvenile Detention Center (JDC).
  • Provide diagnosis and treatment of medical problems and order and interpret laboratory tests for screening and for diagnosing.
  • Minimum Requirements: Requires a Masters Degree in a nursing related field and a minimum of three years experience in psychiatric/mental health nursing. Possession of a valid license as a registered professional nurse, a nurse practitioner and a nurse practitioner with prescriptive authority issued by the State of Virginia; certification as a Nurse Practitioner by the American Nurses Credentialing Center or the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners and possessing a DEA number.

Registered Nurse Supervisor

  • Oversee Program of Assertive Community Treatment (PACT) nursing services to include supervision of nursing staff, monitoring productivity and completion of performance evaluations.
  • Provide clinical services to PACT consumers to include coordinating and overseeing the safe, efficient provision of nursing service delivery in the clinic and community.
  • Minimum Requirements: Requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing and current and valid licensure as a Registered Nurse by the Commonwealth of Virginia or as a part of the Compact Designation (Multi-State Privileges) and seven or more years of nursing experience (specialty area to be specified by the hiring department) OR an Associate’s Degree in Nursing and nine years of nursing experience. Current CPR certification.

 Peer Recovery Specialist

​BH/DS Behavior Specialist I – Forensic Peer Recovery Specialist

  • Provide recovery-based peer support services and outreach to clients transitioning from Virginia Beach Correctional Center (VBCC) to the community. 
  • Meet with individual consumers in VBCC to provide input into the treatment/recovery plan in support of mental health/substance use staff and other treatment team members.
  • Minimum Requirements: Requires a four year degree in a human services field OR any combination of education (above the high school level) and/or experience equivalent to four years in fields related to developmental services, sociology, psychology, or special education.
