Housing Choice Voucher Waiting List FAQs

The Virginia Beach Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) waiting list is closed. No new applications are being accepted. If you have already submitted an application or need more information about the waiting list process, please see the list of frequently asked questions below.

When was the last time the Housing Choice Voucher waiting list was reopened? When will it reopen?

The Housing Choice Voucher waiting list for Virginia Beach reopened on Tuesday, Nov. 9, 2021 and closed the same day. Currently there is no timeframe for when the waiting list will reopen.

How can I check the status of my application?

Rental Housing staff does not disclose information regarding placement on the waiting list. The easiest way to check the status of your application any time is to log into your account at www.assistancecheck.com.

Does submitting an application for the waiting list mean I will receive a voucher?

No. Applying for the waiting list does not guarantee admission to the HCV program. Applicants who are selected from the waiting list will be required to verify information and screened for eligibility for the HCV program.

Does applying to the waiting list mean I will receive a voucher right away?

Due to limited funding and the number of vouchers currently in use, there is no guarantee of immediate assistance. When vouchers are available, applicants will be selected from the waiting list. At that time, applicants will be notified and required to verify application information and screened for eligibility for the HCV program.

How long does a household have to wait to receive a voucher after applying?

The length of time a household waits until they receive a voucher varies and depends on several factors:

  • How many household preferences an eligible applicant meets -- local preferences for selection of eligible families are (in no particular order): displacement, victims of domestic violence, homeless, live in Virginia Beach, elderly or disabled, veteran, employed, families with children, and insufficient funding;
  • The number of waiting list applications we receive; and
  • How soon vouchers become available when current HCV participants leave the program

Why does it take so long to receive a voucher?

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has allotted a fixed number of vouchers for Virginia Beach. Vouchers only become available as current HCV participants leave the program. The number of applicants on the waiting list also has an impact on the length of time it takes to admit new households into the HCV program.
