Volunteer Support Tech Application Process


1. Complete the VST Personal History Questionnaire (PHQ).

The 2018 application process is now closed. Please email hirevbfd@vbgov.com to be added to the VST Interest List.

2. Attend the information session and physical ability assessment.

The physical assessment consists of the following: 

  • Lift a 60lb object and carry that object on flat ground for a distance of 100'
  • Pull an empty 5", 100' hose line on flat ground for a distance of 50'
  • Climb a set of stairs (of a least 12 steps) or a single step (12 times) carrying a 30lb object

​3. Attend panel interview

4. Background Investigation

Candidates who successfully complete the physical ability assessment and panel interview will move forward to the background investigation phase. Fire Human Resources will review applications, DMV driving records, references and state and federal background check results. Candidates will also undergo a polygraph exam.

5. Candidates with satisfactory background results will move to the final steps: a Safety Sensitivity Physical, FBI fingerprinting and Child Protective Services registry check (all at the City's expense). Those deemed medically fit for duty who clear these final steps will be able to attend the Volunteer Support Technician training program.
