Volunteer Support Tech Application Process


1. Email wrichard@vbgov.com to schedule a preliminary interview.

2. Complete the VST Personal History Questionnaire (PHQ). The PHQ will be provided if the candidate is selected to move forward after the preliminary interview.

3. Submit PHQ to Fire Human Resources by mail or hand deliver 4817 Columbus Street, 2nd Floor, Virginia Beach, VA 23462

4. After approval of PHQ, meet with Fire Human Resources Specialist to discuss the next steps in the VST process.

7. Safety sensitive physical and uniform fitting

Candidates who successfully complete the physical ability assessment ​will move forward to the background investigation phase. Fire Human Resources will review applications, DMV driving records, references and state and federal background check results. Candidates will also undergo a polygraph exam. Please review the applicant disqualifiers in the Personal History Questionnaire.

Candidates with satisfactory background results will move to the final steps: a Safety Sensitivity Physical, FBI fingerprinting and Child Protective Services registry check (all at the City's expense). Those deemed medically fit for duty who clear these final steps will be able to attend the Volunteer Support Technician training program.
