About the Virginia Beach Fire Department

The Virginia Beach Fire Department is a public safety agency dedicated to protecting our citizens, communities, members, and visitors to foster the feeling of safety any time, any place, through planning, mitigation, response, and restoration. With 20 Fire Stations, 21 Engines, 8 Ladder Trucks, 2 Technical Rescue Trucks, 3 Fireboats, a HazMat Response Vehicle, and just under 500-dedicated, highly trained employees, the VBFD is an “All-Hazards” response agency.

In fact, we are the host agency for the FEMA Urban Search and Rescue Team VA-TF2, an international emergency response team, ready to deploy to any natural or manmade disaster.  The VBFD also provides Advanced Life Support medical care as an integral part of the City’s Emergency Medical Response System.  With more than 100 Paramedic Firefighters we respond to more than 25,000 medical emergencies a year.

The Fire Marshal’s Office and our Life Safety Education Division support Community Risk Reduction activities for citizens and business.  Our Fire Investigators are responsible for determining the cause and origin of fires.  VBFD Fire Investigaters have a conviction rate three times higher than the national average.

What began as an All-Volunteer Fire Department with a budget of $2000.00 has evolved into one of the best equipped, best trained Fire Departments in the Commonwealth of Virginia, capable of responding to any emergency.
