FAQ's Are there burning guidelines in the City of Virginia Beach?Yes, Please see our Open Burning section for further details.I had a small fire in my business, do I need to call anyone if I put it out?Yes, all fires need to be reported to the Fire Department regardless of size or duration. Please contact our non-emergency number with the incident details and a unit will investigate the issue. The non-emergency number is 757-385-5000. Restaurants also need to notify the health department if any extinguishers have been discharged and/or if any kitchen suppression systems have been activated.Something has been spilled or dumped on my property, who is responsible for the cleanup?The property owner is ultimately responsible for any hazardous materials dumped on site or into any waterway. The owner and/or other responsible parties will be held liable for any cleanup costs and damages.What are some general annual fire system maintenance requirements?Fire alarm systems, sprinkler systems, and extinguishers all need to be serviced annually. Sprinkler systems may also require a quarterly inspection and a 5 year service in addition to any annual service. Automatic non water based suppression systems with a fusible link need to be serviced every 6 months. All paperwork and service tags should be available at all times. Private hydrants (blue bonnets) need to be serviced annually. Fire doors with a fusible link need to be serviced annually.What types of things do I need to obtain a permit for?A permit needs to be obtained for firework displays, tents over 900sqft, bonfires, pit burns, and vehicle displays. This is not an exhaustive list, for a complete list of permitable items please see our Permits section.Where can I dispose of my old fire extinguishers?The city landfill household hazardous waste facility will take them along with the SPSA Suffolk facility.
