Driver's License Presentation

When are juveniles presented their drivers licenses?

Pursuant to section 46.2-336 of the Code of Virginia, the Department of Motor Vehicles forwards all original driver's licenses issued to persons under the age of 18 years to the judge of the juvenile and domestic relations district court in the city or county in which the licensee resides so that the court may conduct a ceremony to illustrate the responsibility on the privilege of driving a motor vehicle. Once the court receives the license, a notice is mailed to the driver for presentation.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the requirement to attend a ceremony is suspended.  The Department of Motor Vehicles will mail licenses to new drivers.
