QUESTION: Who is the VB Strong Center For and What Kind of Services Does It Offer?

FACT: The VB Strong Center was established to support anyone impacted by the tragic events of May 31, 2019 - City and School employees, their families, families of the victims, or any member of our community. The Center offers a number of services and programs centered around healing and recovery.
The City is partnering with Sentara Healthcare to provide a space, staffing and programming dedicated to serving the healing needs of our community in the wake of 5/31. The Center is fully funded for three years by a $3 million grant from the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services.

Anyone who visits the Center will first be connected with a person who will help determine what services or programs fit an individual’s needs. There are a number of programs offered at the Center at no cost to anyone who wishes to participate such as:
  • Family resources
  • Mental health counseling
  • Support groups
  • Victim resources
  • Alternative therapies such as yoga, art, or speaker series
  • Financial and legal resources or referrals
A complete calendar of events and list of programs are available on the Center’s website

Staff at the Center will also help individuals connect with outside resources, if needed, including selecting an outside counselor. Everyone heals through different ways and at their own pace, hence the Center’s emphasis on individual assessments and guidance along personalized paths to recovery.

The VBStrong Center is first and foremost a place of healing and recovery – anyone who connects with the Center can expect the details of their visit any services they engage with to remain private and confidential, as is the case with any medical-related records.

In addition to the services offered during regular hours, a 24-hour hotline has been established to serve after-hours calls. Simply call 757-507-7200 and a staff member will assist you and guide you through any next steps.
