RUMOR: There will be no more holiday lights at the boardwalk

FICTION: Rumor has it the holiday lights at the beach have been cancelled because City Council will not approve the funds to update the electrical systems. This is not true. The Holiday Lights Merry Mile was presented on the Boardwalk last year, between 8th and 22nd Streets and featured more than 50 of the most popular light exhibits from previous years. And, the 2018 display is slated to be even better.

Every year, Holiday Lights transform the Virginia Beach Boardwalk with a beautiful nautical and holiday-themed display. While it's true that the 2017 season's lighting display was not quite as large as in year’s past, the shortened version was due to the fact the City is in the process of undergoing some upgrades.

City staff and contractors have been testing new technologies and displays so that we can continue this special holiday tradition. More than 50 exhibits, including some of the program’s most popular displays, still lit up the beach from 2nd to 22nd streets and prices were reduced last holiday season to reflect the shorter show.

The 2017 displays featured an all-LED light show that projected more illumination and improved safety via 12-volt electrical technology. Migrating to this new and better technology will extend Holiday Lights into the foreseeable future for all to enjoy in years to come. Residents and visitors can expect new, safer displays to be introduced each season for years to come.
