QUESTION: Does Virginia Beach Collect Unwanted Medications as Part of the National Prescription Drug Take Back Day?

ANSWER: Virginia Beach has four permanent collection sites at each VBPD precinct station available year-round to collect medications and medical sharps.

Items dropped off at a takeback location will be collected, taken to an incinerator and destroyed under the supervision of Virginia Beach Police Department personnel. This method ensures medications are disposed of in a manner that is environmentally sound and keeps prescription drugs and sharps from falling into the wrong hands.

Flushing medications down the toilet isn’t a safe or environmentally friendly way to dispose of them. Sewage treatment plants aren’t able to filter out the chemicals in medications, so these chemicals get released back into the water supply. From there, they have the potential to impact crops, livestock, wildlife and people.

In fact, studies conducted by the Environmental Protection Agency have detected pharmaceuticals in the water supply across the country. Admittedly, the doses found are typically lower than what’s found in a prescribed dose; however, prolonged exposure to low doses has the potential to cause health problems in the long run.

Tossing discarded medications in the trash isn’t a safe way to dispose of them either. It’s far too easy to rip open a trash bag and pull out any pills or sharps. An insulin syringe in the hands of a diabetic patient is a lifesaving medical tool, but to an addict, who injects an illicit substance, it’s a device to further their drug abuse.

If you have expired or unneeded prescription or over-the-counter medications or medical sharps, you can drop them off at any of the four VBPD precinct offices listed below. Illegal drugs and paraphernalia are not accepted at any of the takeback locations.
