Virginia Beach Dedicated New Sculpture “The Canoes” on July 28

The donated piece sits atop the pedestrian overlook on the new Lesner Bridge.​

Virginia Beach's newest public art sculpture, "The Canoes," by nationally renowned artist ​Donald Lipski, welcomes visitors to Lynnhaven Inlet and the Chesapeake Bay. The gateway piece features 10 full-size aluminum canoes with elaborate lace patterns stamped into them – a nod to the decorative arts of the early settlers.  

The individual canoes are joined at the center in a stylized sunburst, balanced atop a tall arch. It will be lit in the evening by soft LED lights and features a seating area overlooking the bay.  

"The Canoes" was fully funded by private donations raised from the community by the Public Art Virginia Beach Foundation and gifted to the community.
