City Council Seeks Candidate to Fill Vacant Lynnhaven District Seat

Registered voters living in the Lynnhaven District who are interested in filling the vacancy are encouraged to apply.

Wood, the City Council is seeking applications from registered voters living within the district who are interested in filling the Lynnhaven District vacancy. State code authorizes the City Council to fill the vacancy until a special election is scheduled, which is anticipated to be November 2022.

The application package is due on or before noon on Sept. 17, 2021 and must include the following items:

  • Resume or Curriculum Vitae (CV)
  • Statement of Economic Interests 
  • Letter of Interest that includes responses to the following:
    • Why you want to serve on City Council
    • Your understanding of City Council's top 3 priorities
    • Your understanding of and position on the Agriculture Reserve Program (ARP)
    • Your understanding of and position on resort policies including the Tourism Investment Program (TIP) and Residential Parking Permit Program (RPPP)
    • How the issue of affordable housing may be addressed
    • Your ability to work as a member of a team of Council Members with a diversity of opinions and experience
    • Your understanding of and position on the Flood Mitigation Bond Referendum
    • Your plans to run in November for the seat to which you are asking to be appointed 
    • What are your perspectives on mental health and substance use issues in comparison to other healthcare epidemics? What do you perceive as the primary issues related to mental health in Virginia Beach and how would you prioritize mental health issues in the engagement of your duties as a council member and public servant?

The City Council expects to review applications in closed session on Sept. 21 to identify candidates who will be invited to interview. Public interviews are planned for Sept. 28. The citizen ultimately appointed by the City Council will hold office until voters fill the vacancy by special election and the individual elected has qualified to serve or Dec. 31, 2022, whichever is sooner.
