Here’s Everything You Need to Know about Voting in the June 11 Party Primary Elections

The deadline to register to vote is May 20.

Virginia Beach registered voters are encouraged to cast their ballots on June 11 in the party primary elections for Virginia Senate and city treasurer. Both the Democratic and Republican parties will have a primary for Senate members to represent Virginia’s 6th and 7th Districts. The Republican Party will also have a primary for city treasurer.

Since Virginia voters do not register by political party, any voter can vote whenever a primary is held. If both the Democratic and Republican parties are holding primaries at a polling location on the same day, Virginia law allows the voter to vote in only one of the party primary elections. Voters must indicate whether they want to vote in the Democratic Party primary or the Republican Party primary.

To be eligible to vote on Tuesday, June 11, those not registered, or any registered voter who needs to make a change to their registration address or name, must submit a voter registration application no later than close of business on Monday, May 20. Online voter registration is available at

Mailed voter registration applications must be post-marked on or before May 20.

Residents may register in-person at the Voter Registration & Elections Office, all Virginia Beach Public Library locations, and Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles offices (in conjunction with DMV transactions) during normal hours of operation.

In order to receive an absentee ballot by mail, absentee ballot applications must be received by 5 p.m. on Tuesday, June 4. The voted ballot must arrive in the office by 7 p.m. on Election Day, June 11.

If you will be out of town or are unable to make it to the polls on June 11, the Voter Registrar’s Office is open for absentee voting in-person from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday through June 7. Absentee in-person voting will also be available on Saturday, June 8 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Office will be closed Monday, May 27 in observance of Memorial Day.
