Commissioner of the Revenue
If you have sold your vehicle

The proration of Personal Property Taxes is provided for by the Code of Virginia, Section 58.1-3516 and Virginia Beach City Ordinance 35-6.1. If you have sold or disposed of your vehicle, the Commonwealth of Virginia requires that you directly inform the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles.

If you have traded your vehicle through a dealership, you need to inform DMV of the disposal of your old vehicle, since most dealers do not handle this.

After the Department of Motor Vehicles' records have been updated, please contact the Commissioner of the Revenue. If possible, have your bill number available.

Or, you may complete the Request for Proration of Personal Property Tax form, and mail or fax to the Commissioner of the Revenue.
